Henry, bless him, is doing really well, and last night totally polished off an ENTIRE net of haylage!!

Now a lot of you may be sarcastically thinking "whoopy-doo" but you see Henry has been with me for just a few weeks, severely underweight and wouldn't touch forage of any kind.

He's been more or less living on wynergy feeds four times a day and having sloppy mixes in truggs of beetpulp, fibre cubes and I've been adding Alpha A oil at an increasing rate to try and get him onto 'firmer' feeds.....

Last week he began 'playing' with the hay he has constantly in hope he may begin eating it, so I tried him again with haylage and he began eating a small amount....

It was just total shock to be greeted with a practically empty net this morning, I burst into tears!

Still no interest in the readi-grass....does anyone know how long this lasts? It's in a bin with the lid on in a cool, dry place, but I tipped it in and threw the wrapper...so no idea.

I'm just so thrilled with him! What a clever boy!
 
Good that he eating haylage,get him out on good quality grazing as soon as you can,realise this will be later than norm as grass growth rate shite at min!!I personally do not like the readigrass and prefer graze on but it will keep for a few months no longer,keep a check on it!!
Nobody on here will be thinking whoopy doo at all,use what works for your boy,and if he enjoys hayledge at the mo then give him it,as he gains condition you can try hay!!!You will get there!!

I think it's taken him a while to lose the association of chewing etc with pain. His teeth were in a bad way, the insides of his cheeks were sore too, so they may have healed in the past couple of weeks too.....He's also drinking water better now, as I've been having to empty a boiling kettle in his water to take the chill off, though again, it may just be because the weather's warmer so the water doesn't reach such a cold point? Who knows?

As for the net, he must have started munching last night, realised how good it was and munched for England! He even ate that over his Trugg of slop!

We had a lovely walk this morning, taking a different route around the edge of the fields, and along a track the back way home, and he was really on his toes! I've been saying it for a while but I really do think I'll walk him out full time in his bridle, as he seems to refine his behaviour a little!

He's going on holiday for a fortnight next week, only to a friends 10 minutes away, but she has a good big field, and I have poxy paddocks and limited grazing, so not only will he get a good leg stretch, which I think he needs lol but more importantly some good grass, which will give him a huge boost!
 
Thanks hadfos-it took me ages to write my reply (have hurt my hand) and yours wasn't there when I initially replied. I've managed to get good grazing for a fortnight, that's all I've managed to secure so far.....I really want him off my land for the summer so that it can be rested (haven't been here long and it's very overgrazed from previous inhabitants) shall keep searching.

I can always send him to my mothers, something I'm seriously thinking about. I'll only be able to visit him at weekends, but it'll do him more good than anything, and bring him home at the end of summer. I just wanted to wait until the vet was happy he'd be ok.

She's also in N.lincs, a small Village between Louth and Grimsby....is that anywhere near you?
 
PWH - that's great news - glad he's getting the idea it's not too painful

FWIW my lad very rarely eats a full net and always has a load left in the morning - never been a great forage eater (not that he needs any more weight)

There's a place up the road from us with loads of grazing (toom much really) - don't know if they'd take him as they only have 2 there and there's also a livery yard opposite who's grazing is more than ample (on same road)

Not managed to get in to Co-op to see you this week but will def pop in - are you working tomorrow? I've got the day off!
 
I missed your original posts about Henry but have caught up with them now. So pleased you are making such good progress, I think you will see a huge difference once he goes out on some good grass. Keep the updates coming.
 
I'll have to look into the grazing Miller....

I'm off now until monday, thank God lol, then working monday, thursday, friday and saturday. I'm spending the next few days top dressing the unused paddocks (I WILL have grass lol) and painting the Hallway and landing, God...I live such a glamourous life!
