And we now had short feet :) Okay theyre not the tidiest, but they are nice and short so he can live out now with no problems :) (he probably could have before tbh, but I was worried about his long feet affecting him in some way :o ) and this is how it went ...

We had the farrier out for Henry a few weeks ago, 2ml sedalin and we managed to get half a foot trimmed .. he wouldnt let the farrier do any more than that, kept trying to jump over us as soon as he had hold of his foot. So, next day I gave him 6ml sedalin to see how he reacted to it ... still didnt touch him. So for this next farrier visit I thought stuff it, give him the whole tube (10ml :S ) thinking that he'd surely be a bit sleepy .. no :/ But he was a lot better at having his back feet picked up, so farrier did them first :) So, now we had nice short back feet, but still long front feet, which every time the poor farrier tried to pick up Henry would rear and spin his bum on him, but wasnt trying to kick. We tried being nice to him at first, but he was getting used to us being there so started taking the pee, so then we started telling him off. After a smack he kind of started behaving, but was still trying to rear at us, so then he ended up with the rope around his nose, his lip twitched and his ear twitched. He let the other farrier pick up his foot but as soon as he went to cut it Henry reared up spun round and bucked as high as he possibly could, aiming for the farrier. So he got a whack for that and the more experienced farrier had the other farrier hold his lip and ear while he did his feet. By the end of it Henry gave up and stood like a good pony even when we let go of his ear and lip, so he got lots of strokes and pats and nice words :) So today Henry had fun running around his field :D Hopefully next time he'll be better now he knows how to behave :)

Cookies for anyone who managed to read all that and understand it :o

Had mine sedated by vet this week for farrier. I've only just taken him on and he hadn't been done for a couple of years (!) or been handled really so decided it was safer for everyone concerned. Farrier thinks we might be ok with sedalin next time, I'm practicing every day with picking his feet up so we'll have to see..............

I am guessing hes a rescue/unhandled horse?

My lad is the same, used to be perfect until some arse of a farrier booted him for no reason, never been the same since but there is no way I would hit him or even twitch his ear for it.

sedalin doesnt touch some horses but will calm most if given an hour before the event! anything less than an hour then the adrenaline can and will over ride the sedalin#! keep doing henry's feet and tie him short and tight! sorry dont know his history but you must battle on and make him learn!!! good luck! and dont give in to him! and yes he can stand on 3 legs for a long time!

oops completly forgot id posted this :o

Henry is very nervous of new people, and takes ages to get used to them. When I first got him I couldnt get near him for days until he cut himself quite badly and i was determined to get closer to have a look. Now I can go in and put his headcollar on in his stable and take him out, even gave him a bath yesterday and he was good as gold. He'll only let others near him if I'm holding him and isnt even tempted by food. I think in the past he was beaten a bit, which explains his nervousness, but once he gets used to you and realises what your trying to do to him, he stops being so scared and starts taking the pi$$. I've been dragged across the school, fields by him, one time he pushed me over in his stable and dragged me round in a circle on the floor as I refused to let go of the rope, and he even reared up when I accidently scared him, slid forwards and sent me flying making me land very heavily on my bum (ouchies) and whack my head on the wall (even more ouchies). I've discovered with him that most of the time when he's started taking the mick that if I give him a smack and a shout, and then try again, he generally gives up as he realises that being naughty means bad things happen, so when he does as I want him to do he gets loads of fuss and told what a good little man he is, although sometimes he's such a woos that even some fuss is scary!! But he has improved so much since I got him, he's only about 11.2 so most people are bigger than him, and therefore scarier :p and so to even have the farrier do his feet at all is a huge step for him and I'm quite pleased at how he behaved as I was expecting a lot worse! Tbh ... I have thought about getting the vet to sedate him .. but I dont think he would get near him with or without a scary needle!! :p
