Sue, hows baby? Interested to see a previous thread from someone about their awful situation with same symptoms. They got fluids in and Pepto Bismal. Please let us know how you all are xx
First chance I've had to come on here was earlier and it wouldn't allow me to log on..Grrrr!
Well good news is he is a little better. The blood is less sticky, the urine is flowing profusely and is clear which is good, and he is drinking lots of milk out of the syringe. can't seem to suss the bottle teat out at all though, he just grabs and holds on biting the end off.
His temperature has come up to normal this evening and he looks a tiny bit brighter, we had to clip most of his tail off as it was poo soaked and there is a risk of maggots laying in it, but it will always grow back. There is a limit to how often you can wash a tail...
The vet has done some more tests and found an infection of some sort, but it could be the one calves get, or water borne, we just don't know.
Either way he is being treated with Cephguard IV, equitrim paste, (antibiotics) the runs have almost stopped so no more medicine for that until we see what happnes to that function.
He has also had b12 injection, mutlivitamin and bicarb in his IV and as much milk as I can get into him.
The hard part is he isn't drinking fromhis Mum so I am off in a little while to strip her out with a massive syringe then squirt it into him. (plus foal milk)
We had a horse whisperer out today who reckons he is reluctant to drink from his dam as he feels the cause of his illness is in her milk, but the vet says only worms could pass through and none showed up on the tests..
She offered healing to him for ages and he did quite definitely brighten up after that. the vet of course says it's his treatment and who knows, I just want him to get better!
Now for the really hard part... He has to have a litre of milk every two hours at least, so it's slow work as he will only accept 60 mls at a time from the syringe. I plan to try a bucket and hope he may drink his dam's milk from it.. So I can have 5 hours sleep tonight if I get him stuffed full of milk first.
Tomorrow I inject into the port twice daily then flush with solution, then cap it again.
We have the stable on tv cam and it's in the lounge all the time on a portable, so not quite as difficult as it might be otherwise.
CCj has gone out this evening as she has worked really hard today , the other two foals seem fine and were galloping round earlier, (the new field is lush grass)
She will take over some of the work from me tomorrow.
Of course my son who normally is brilliant at foal feeding is away until Tuesday, P is on crutches so can do B*** all...
I am pretty knackered already and will try and get some sleep later before the last feed.
Those of you who fancy breeding a foal be warned, when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong and is heartbreaking to go through.
The water samples won't come back until next week so no news there, but if we can keep him going until his own defences fight it off he will survive..
I just wish he would do more than stand in a corner with his head down.
Keep sending those good wishes please, he isn't out of the woods by a long way yet...
Glad to hear he is a little better and I am keeping him in my thoughts and sending all the good vibes I can. I wish I was nearer to you so I could help with some of the feeding. Its so hard to lose a little one and you guys have already had to deal with one loss, which was heartbreaking so I hoping and praying that this little fella will pull through. He seems a real fighter.
Sue the mere fact that he's still in there fighting is a very good thing......as you know these babies can go downhill so quickly, but if he's even just a little bit brighter it's something to be grateful for.
All the vibes he needs are winging their way to him, and take yourself a bloody big hug, sounds like you need it*hug*
That sounds so much more hopeful; let's hope he's turned the corner.
When we had a small foal very poorly on antibiotics that we had to syringe down him (Neo Natal Dysfunction type) - spelling is awful!) he was off suck so we bottled him, the mare, a maiden, was a saint. We thought we had lost him at one point, but he battled on and she stood right by him the whole time, would leave her hay and stand and watch what we were doing to him. He got quite good on the bottle and after five days was bright enough to stand and watch while I cackhandedly milked her out; he must have got fed up with waiting cos he suddenly barged past and latched onto the teat as if his life depended on it - which it did to a point - and he never looked back! Later on, he became a winning hurdler and chaser with Venetia! I hope yours makes as good a recovery Sue and will keep hoping for you.
Positive vibes going out to you henry horn...
all sounds good and very hopefully...wishing you loads of luck...
shame I am not based in the area as I could do with putting my vet nurse skills to test and help you out through the night as your son is out of action...
stay as positive as you can...the horse whisper sounds brill...would love to know more details, costs etc when you have more time...
thinking of you...
Sending more vibes...I must say these difficulties emphasise how difficult breeding is and how much time is needed...I do hope he continues to pick up, he is in the best possible hands.
Your post made me really tearful, both for the little foal, and also for the love and care and commitment you are giving him. I hope so much that he pulls through.
He may have his head down, but at least he is up! Sending as many vibes as possible and try to look after yourself as well, we bottle fed one and we were all knackered. All the best
Am killing time on here between feeds, daren't sit down by tv or I fall asleep!
The vet showed me how to use a large syringe with the end cut off and suction bit upside down I think (?) to milk the mare, it's brilliant! You just apply to the teat with some air left in, use syringe and there is a syringe full of milk..
It is so quick and easy, and so much easier than attempting to do both teats with your hands at once!
I daren't think how much my vet bill will be after this little lot, he has been four times already and the antibiotics look expensive...
There goes my planned weekend in new York for Christmas shopping I reckon..
More and more of those good vibes for the baby to keep on fighting. He must be exhausted, poor thing (the head down ?) bet you are too...Hang in there !
Massive load of get well wishes
