I posted a few days ago about Josie's dry flaky mane. Well I washed it with head and shoulders and have been putting on vit e cream. The flakes seemed to go, and it wasn't half as dry and scaly. Went down this morning, and it's gone!!!

She's not rubbed it I dont think, no rub marks, it's just fallen out!

She had surgery 2 weeks ago, could it be a reaction to this?

She also had a suspected case of ring worm, so was treating her for that too, the bath every 3 days thingie, forgot the name. Could this have caused it?

Is there anything I can do to make it grow back and stay there?

Anlgo-arabs dont look so good bald!

I think cornucrescine (sp) gets hair growth back. Could be the ringworm that has done it or has she got sweet itch. What does your vet say as I would ask before you put anything on it just in case it is sore and painful. May need some aloe vera gel for a few days to sooth.

Indeed B_B, Cornucrescine works wonders - but stinks to high heaven!

. Used it on LL's top of tail and bottom of mane two summers ago and it came back grand

.

Also, the basic biotin in the feed will help from the inside.

Ditto the vet thing though.

i would call the vet the mane should not just fall out. Of course if she has itched it out it is a different matter!

Would be interested to hear what the vet says.
I asked about the rug because some horses sweat too much under some fly rugs, and their manes fall out!

Well it's funn you should say about sweating etc, as we think the lumps were caused by sweating after the op???

It wasn't ringworm, but we treated it as if it was to nip it in the bud, and all the lumps have gone now.

It's very strange

I've got a pony who's a bit sweetitchy, but he can't wear the fly rugs because he seems to get hot under them... and comes up in lumps. These scab up, then the scabs come off leaving bald bits. Now there's a thought.
There was a discussion on another forum about horses losing their manes due to this sweating under the fly rugs. If they lose their manes due to the sweating, rather than rubbing, I wonder if that does have something to do with what's happened to yours? They said that the hairs were dropping out at the root, rather than going scruffy like they do with rubbing.
Good luck with this anyway, such a shame to have a bald mare!

Stress can cause hair loss in humans, so it may be the same in horses - OH had a very stressful time at work a couple of years ago and went almost completely bald (he has no male baldness normally) a little while after shedding lots of very flaky skin.
