I am currently using Dodson & Horrell placid for my young TB - it does seem to be having some effect - I have heard that you can get a cheaper version off a herbal site but can't find it - does anyone know of alternatives to the d&h? I have tried the naf products

Also what are views on Keratex hoof hardner? We already use a supplement to her feed but have been advised to seal around the nail area of the hoof as her feet are not the best!

I use top spec calmer works a treat, My horse had to have shoes off for a few weeks and was a bit foot sore I was reccommended to use kevin bacon hoof dressing, was a bit expensive but was brilliant back with shoes on now but still using it on feet and they have never looked so good.

I would look into her diet before useing harsh chemicals such as keratex. Something iv learnt through here and it's very good advise. Have u tried just mag oz?

My advice would be not to waste your money on any of them! I wasted nearly £30 on a tub of Mag ox after reading stuff on here and it did absolutely NAFF ALL!!

Then your diet moomin1 is not lacking mag which is good. A lot off people waste lots off money on expensive calmers when most off the time the main ingrediant is mag oz and can buy it a lot cheaper. We all know fast growing grass lacks mag so always worth trying. And good anyway if horse is barefoot

For what it's worth I agree with the others who have said that diet is the way to improve hooves.

Moomin what were you supplementing mag ox to achieve and how much were you giving to do it?

I've not had the mag ox for my lad for a week since he came back from Rockley and I've noticed a huge difference in him in the past few days compared to how he was when he arrived. The only thing he hasn't had is the mag ox so it must be making a difference to him.

Of course there is the possibility that your forage isn't lacking magnesium so maybe that's why it didn't work?

Either way OP I've also been told Keratex will dry hooves out in summer too so wouldn't use it anyway.

Some of the real hoof experts will be along soon and I'm sure they'll be able to help more than I can. :)

As a calmer at the recommended dosage. She's still just the same!!

Thanks all - long story but before we got her she had pulled off most of her hoof on barbed wire - it has re-grown but due to being under nourished has alot of dead still there - we have only had her a few months and have built her back up in condition and diet etc - she is having formula 4 feet supplement which is helping but still has pretty messed up front feet. Farrier advises anti bacteria tea tree type treatment to holes in hoof and to strengthen around where the nails go - hence question about keratex but don't want to make her brittle....
