My mare has come down with laminitis, with an infection of the laminae in one of her hooves. Obviously she is on various medication from the vet and is on box rest, but I was wondering if anyone had tried any herbal/homeopathic remedies for laminitis along side and if it had or has any effect? I understand what works for some may not work for others...but worth a shot.

I am offering my mare (she has dreadful concussive laminitis) aromatherapy oils as inhalation - Yarrow, Peppermint, Neroli and lavender.
Please be wary of herbal ingested remedies. I am really into alternative therapies, but only with vet approval and my vet was telling me how she had to pts a horse that was being given herbal remedies that she paid little attention to but it turned out were inhibiting the vets meds and impedeing healing.

My mare is getting ALoe Vera juice and I am feeding 'Horsey Porridge' for laminitics from Valley view feeds - it's milled carob (or locust bean) and alfalfa and rich in nutrients.

I really don't know much about alternative therapies, I've had a good look on the net but seems like there is so many different things out there I wouldn't know where to start or what would be best for her. Not heard of inhaling the oils before, what does that do? I gave her some willow tonight after reading up that it has the same kind of effect as asprin. I only gave her a little bit but she went mad for it! Yet to see if it will have any effect...

I'm doing a course at the moment on digestion and nutrition and one of my books suggest plants with a good Ca:P ratio can help.

I think I will continue to give her the willow (anyone have any idea how amount? She's a 14.2 sec D...this is all foreign to me) and try and get some hawthorn to improve her circulation!! Will check with the vet but can't see this interfering with the danilon and norodine that she's already on. Laminitis...pain in the bum!
