I took Herbie to a little show on Sun as a practice for the new forest show.
He was a little star in the morning and almost dragged me into the lorry :D (So nice after all we've been through in the passed trying to load him :( )
We arrived in lots of time and I entred best turned out and M&M inhand.
I got Herbie ready and he was gleaming. I was very pleased with how he looked. We entred the ring and walked round a couple of times. Suddenly without warning Herbs threw himself on the floor and started to roll   I managed to get him up before he went over so only one side was dirty. I tried to brush off as much of the dust as I could with my hand. When we were all pulled into the middle Herbie started going through my jacket pockets looking for polos.
 Did he realy think he deserved any after rolling
At the end of this class we were pulled in last. To be honest I wasn't surprised as he had rolled at the start and wasn't as clean as he could be. :( But I got a shock when the judge told me why I was last. She said I was last as I haddn't platted or used quarter marks   Herbies an M&M  You don't plait him or use quarter marks  Also He's bay roan I don't think the quarter marks would show up on him anyway
Luckly there was a small break before my next class so I took him back to the lorry to clean him up alittle. :) Next was the M&M class. I was feeling alittle more confidant about this one and of the five other ponies in the ring I though only one was a threat. A very nice welshie. I thought maybe the mini shetti would also beat us on cuteness but I thought we would atleast get 3rd. I couldn't have been more wrong :( We got pulled in 5th. Beatern by ponies who you couldn't even tell what they were ment to be :( When the judge gave me my rosette I calmly asked why I was so far down the line up. She said it was because Herbies back feet are to close together   Herbie is built like a tank. How far appart does she want his feet  Any further appart and he would be doing the splits :p ;) :D
I left the ring laughing. Thats showing all the others in the ring knew the judge I was the odd one out. My OH was prity annoyed but I just told him to wait for the new forest show. Then we will have a proper judge and get a proper opinion on him. :)
Appart from the rubbish judging (and I'm not just saying that cos I didn't win, It's because of the reasons I didn't get placed higher) I had a realy good morning. Herbie was a star.
Sun was a realy realy tough day for me as it was 1 year since I lost Lucy :( I miss her so very very much but Herbie realy helped me make it through the day.
Here are a couple of pics of the horrid but handsom rolly polly pony himself :p :D

Thankyou for reading have a nice refreashing Icelolly if you got to the end. :D

When I did showing on my old grey pony I was advised to bath him in bleach (diluted) and if that didn't have him properly white use thick bleach on him (neat) :(

Crikey! That's awful!

I was once showing a pony and the judge told me we'd have been placed 'at least 3 places higher' if I'd used more baby oil on his feathers.

Load of tripe.

Sounds familiar...

Had to laugh at the rolling - never seen that one before!

If it makes you feel any better M wees in the middle of our line ups and gets put down!!!

Have you thought it could be because the pony isnt overly flashy for showing yet? He doesnt appear to have a huge amount on topline and looks quite weak behind. For a quality m&m his mane would be much longer (not that you can change that over night) but if there is no 'natural' length to the mane, as a judge, I would expect to see it plaited especially if the class wasnt Mountain and Moorland specific. And lets face it these days, show condition is as important as whether you have any clothes on or not. Just to add, I am not doubting that the little fella isnt fab at other things before I get slated again for being a bitch/wearing dresses etc.

Funny story, Laura, it reminds me of a M&M class a few years ago when my Dales mare was placed 2nd to a super SecD (I didn't have a problem with the placing) and the judge said to me 'I like cobs!'

Those pics don't show him off at his best unfortunatly :( OH never seems to be in the right place/ take the picture at the right time. :p

bakedbean he's not young He's actualy 10 but has done nothing. That was only his 3rd time showing.

OneInAMillion  I've heard some things in my time but thats awful

tallyho! thats Herbie likes to keep you on your toes :p

Winklepoker he is a forester. I've been studying forester turn out for ages and looked at the breed standered. They all seem to have shorter manes now. Sadly Herbs rubbed some of his out at the start of the year so his is prity awful I know  As for plaiting for the turn out class. Best turned out to me has always been best turned out true to type. Maybe thats just me. I don't normaly enter that class to be honest but there was no other class for me to do.

I'll just wait and see what they say at the new forest :) I prob shouldn't have gone on Sun realy as I was feeling very out of sorts and probably let Herbs down by not showing him propaly. But all I realy care about is that he behaved himself. He's such a good boy now (when he wants to be ;) ) So diffrent from the pony I took on a year and a half ago. :)

Some odd comments there but it sounds like you had a good day any way. I can imagine Herbies smug face as he rolled :D. I think its nice to see a pony thats not obese in the name of show condition and as for his legs where does she expect them to be???

He does lack topline, but i personally wouldnt want much more weight on him.

We are working on the topline :) But he will deff not have any more weight put on nomatter what anyone says about that. Having delt with Lami for years I want to keep Herbie lami free :) If it came to him carrying more weight I would give up showing right now.

You are a shining example!!! :):) If only all owners thought about the horse intead of the red rosette, maybe laminitis could be a thing of the past...

He looks fine to me ;)

I think that often judges are asked to judge outside their experience..i.e show pony judges asked to judge M&M classes..although occasionally i think that some wouldn't know their crest from their fetlocks :D

I was once placed down the line for plaiting my PB welsh... PB's are MEANT to be shown plaited and another time my daughter was placed last in an equitation class because the judge didn't like the colour of her pony (perlino)...and I quote ' lovely show sweetheart, such a shame about the colour' !!! ...'Que sara, sara' as the song goes ;)

Well you can't knock the cheeky boy for character can you? Rolling in the ring, that did make me smile. "How very dare you have me all clean and puffy Mother. Take that, and that, and that" says Herbie as he grinds as much dirt as possible into himself before you can get him back up.

Do you know what? I bet you had the most fun there at that Show because you love Herbie anyway, it isn't about being a trophy hunter or anything.

A nice way to spend Sunday. Lucy would approve and wouldn't want you to be upset x

Well, had I been the judge I would have placed you first because I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing - cheeky boy! That would have made my day.
I was once downplaced in a veteran class because my boy tried to eat the judge's hat (well it was a lovely yummy straw boater) and I nearly fell off I was giggling so much.

Perhaps we should have new classes such as "most in character native breed", and "most cantankerous veteran" LOL

What a shame, some odd comments, should have come to our show at Brockenhusrt Part!! :)
It was my first time showing my Herbie and the judging was great (well I thought so and I wasn't even the winner!), we did have a really good day though.

tallyho! that would be the perfect world. No lami :)

GingerCat I once walked passed a judge while I was riding Lucy and heard her say "Yuck, Chestnut mare" I turned round and walked out the ring. Thats showing though, judges personal opinion.

ISHmad I did have fun. I laughed about Herbie rolling (It's such a herbie thing to do ;) I just hope he doesn't do it when I start to do ridden showing with him ;) :p :D ) It's not about the winning at all it's about having fun with my pony. He's already the champion of the world. Just look how much he's come on :D

millhouse thankyou. There is never a dull moment when Herbs is around :p :D :D

JessnGeorge love the new class ideas :D :D

burtie I didn't know there was a show at Brokenhurst :( Glad you had a good day :) What is your Herbie like?

I am not a showing person, I like watching, but would never enter, but as a fellow Forester owner, I know just what Herbie was thinking as he entered the ring..." Oh look mum, DUST. Oh I got to get me some of that, I mean it's DUST....."

Still, sounds like you had fun.

NeilM that made me laugh :D Foresters are such fun arn't they. :D

Charem I'm doing the new forest gelding 4yrs and over inhand, on the wed. If you spot us do come over and say hi :D Just look for the weany bay roan rolling around on the floor ;) :D :D

sounds like herbie was just perfecting the au naturale look for you ! glad you had a good day anyway that is my biggest annoyance with some local shows in that they get one judge to judge everything from show ponies to m&m to working hunters ? you usually find they place those that are their type and the workmanlike but possibly more correct hairy ones are eclipsed by some of the flashier types/movements etc. how ever it was nice to see a fell come reserve champion in a cuddy championship at the royal highland show over about 12 other types, hunters, sports horses, part bred arabs etc

New Forest Riding Club Annual show, in hand, ridden, showjumping and dressage but all fairly basic stuff for people to have a go at. My horse is really a Dressage horse so this was a fun day out for him, we did Ridden Hunter, Riding Club Horse and had a go at our first showjumping round which wwas great fun!

Here is a pc at the show:

I will do! I'm riding a big, stocky chestnut with flaxen mane and tail who can sometimes lack in the brake department!

I think i'm doing the olympia qualifier on one day and some sort of ridden new forest on another day-probably wednesday, will have to check with owner! We've also got his little sister who's a 3 yr old, chestnut with flaxen mane + tail in an inhand class so am bound to bump in to you at some point!

Good luck! xx

Burtie I saw you and your horse at that show. i was the weirdo that kept staring at him whilst you were waiting to go in to the championship, he is truly STUNNING, and very tall!

I don't really do that sort of showing but those are some bizarre comments from the judges!
Anyway, big well done to both of you! He looks fab and am glad you went out and enjoyed yourselves :D Even if he did decide to enjoy himself by rolling around in dirt.. ponies, eh? :o :) xx

Well I'd love to take credit but we didn't get to the championship!! 3rd in the Hunter and 4th in the RC horse, was 1st but the jump was bigger than we were expecting and my horse was very novicy over it, cleared the lot bush and all, bless him I was expecting something around 2' ish!

The 2nd place in the ridden hunter was similar to mine but even taller so I suspect you mean him, he was very nice :)

dalesslave good news about the fell :) It's normaly the welshies who shine in the show ring and I think your right I think it was the same judge ALL day and I think she was just a friend of the organiser. It was a very small local show.

burtie your horse looks lovely. Alot bigger than my Herbie although prob alot less cheeky ;) :p :D Glad you had fun. Thats what it's about after all. i'll have to keep an eye out for that show next year. :)

Charem I'll keep an eye out for you. Although I may be easyer to spot ;) Hopefully there won't be to many bay roans there. I want to stand out in the ring ;) :p :D

VioletStripe thankyou. He's such a cheeky monkey, but thats why I love him ;) :p :D :D

Good on you for going - and well done Herbie for being such a good (if not rather cheeky) boy.

I remember showing my nf in a veteran class - she looked fantastic (she scrubbed up well for her 20s) but was a nightmare, napping, rearing, bucking, broncing her way round the ring. I was amazed we weren't shown the exit - instead we came 5th (from 12). The judge's comment? "I like to see a horse with character" !!
