So I bring the monster in from the field today & he's got two gashes on his head in the middle, at eye level. I was all ready to call the vet out, until I cleaned it up and saw that it was actually quite superficial. This horse just can't stop getting himself into scrapes! Apparently he was playing chicken with a helicopter this morning, too :p

But my question is this - would you give your horse time off for something like this? I've been lucky enough not to have had head wounds to deal with in the past, so it's new territory. Cheers.

No, the cut's not affecting his vision, and his balance seems fine. It looks like whatever did it was quite sharp, so he couldn't have hit it too hard or the cut would be deeper - so I'm not expecting a concussion or anything either.

I'd give him tomorrow off and see how he is - horses have a bad habit of mispresenting injuries to us!

haha, i had a very accident prone horse a while back that was forever cutting himself in the field, and you could bet your last pound if he didn't have the day off it'd end up with him having weeks off with lameness! grrrr
