I wasn’t sure whether to post this in veterinary or breeding sorry!

Is there a genetic test available to ascertain whether the arthritis a horse has is due to its genetic makeup, or due to previous trauma?

I have a lovely mare who has severe arthritis of the right hock, but only the right hock. She’s 11 now and I’ve owned her since she was 18months old, she has had two incidents involving this hock.

One at 2yrs, Where she was found with fencing wrapped and tangled round it- she has ‘tiger stripe’ scars here. She wasn’t lame at any point due to this, it seemed very superficial at the time.

Also one at 4yrs where she had a puncture wound - the very early signs of arthritis were noted when she had xrays at this point, to check for foreign bodies- so it would not have been caused by this, possibly exacerbated though?

It would be really interesting to know if there were any testable markers for this. Dr google has been slightly confusing so thought I’d pop a post here. And help/thoughts welcome!

I don’t think you can ever 100% know but I think generally when arthritis is only on one side and the opposite joint is good it’s due to injury.

My mare has one arthritic pastern and the other is good. Vet is convinced she must have done something to it at some point as normally conformation issues affect both sides.

You won’t ever know for definite though
