My mare is having a foal in May, its my first but not hers.
Being a complete novice in this field I would like to ask all you experienced breeders about the vaccination.
I have been told she needs the first at 5 months, then 7, then 9. Do you all have this vaccination as standard or is it just personal choice, just to be sure?.
She is kept with my other mare and doesn't have contact with any other horses, but a stud acouple of miles as the crow flies has had mares with this infection.
What are your thoughts please??

Definately get one for a mare in foal. If she catches Herpes she will abort. You never know what she will come in contact with no matter how controlled her situation will be...
Remember Herpes lies dormant in all horses and is very easily activated should a horse become run down or catch any bug. There are lots of different strains of Herpes, only one of them causes mare abortion, but even so best to be safe rather than sorry.

I would definitely have her done - we're just getting reports of two yards in East Sussex with Herpes outbreaks - is this anywhere near you?

Is your mare foaling at home? Its very exciting when its the first one!

Ive just had my daughter's mare done - she is with me in the North East at present where I understand there isnt really a problem but the stud in the West Midlands where she was covered had two dead foals with it while she was there. For a little extra cost it is worth it!
