Here is a pic of Ben just less than 2 weeks ago and IMO I think his weight is pretty much spot on (feel free to correct me I know it's not the best pic just the most recent one I have)

However, fast forward 2 weeks and he now has fat pads on his bum and neck! Don't dare post a pic! Nothing in his routine has changed, yes the field he is in has pretty rich grass but as you can see from the pic, it's not exactly abundant :/

Just a little rant really as cant believe how fast he has gone down a slippery slope :( feeling pretty guilty. He is now resigned to being stabled at night with just a small soaked haynet and lots of extra walks out in hand. Very difficult at this age because I can't simply exercise it off!

Don't really think there's much else I can do to get him a bit slimmer (cant strip graze) but if anyone has any enlightening tips please feel free to share!

:)

Ps he is 2 years old, has 1 tiny feed a day of Top Spec balancer, handful of chaff and a tiny splash of omega oil (for his coat which was looking pretty awful coming out of winter)

Mine is doing the same atm despite my best efforts too! Do you have access to an outdoor school at all? I turnout my horse in there for 40 mins in the evening now to burn off extra calories. She doesn't like it because there's nothing to eat so she trots round whinnying in protest :D I also do a little bit of loose schooling over low poles as at least it gets her moving.....I totally understand how frustrating it is, the pounds just seem to pile on them at this time of year.

Hmm that could be a good plan I like your thinking! I do have access to an outdoor school but he's never been in it, was going to wait till the end of the summer as he's only just 2 and pretty immature but he may enjoy a good play around in the mornings/evenings.

That's true he's a bit young to do too much isn't he...but hopefully even a stretch and play in there might help, at least it keeps them off the grass for awhile. For some reason as soon as my mare's hooves touch the surface she seems to want to run round so I make the most of that at this time of year :D

Ahh do we have fat Ben! Obviously not running around enough now DD i missing:-) He will be back soon.

Have you thought of asking Sue if you could put him in the concrete pen in the girls field during the day? It is well fenced he should not be able to get out.

Id stop giving him any extra feed seeing as he clearly doesnt need it!
Horses are perfectly conditioned to survive on just grass so no need for anything extra when he is not doing anything.
Given that hes only two chances are he will have a growth spurth soon enough again and maybe that will even him out!

Yep, we have a very fatty bum bum Ben! We need DD back to eat some more of the grass! Hehe!

Hope your ok and will be joining us again soon :)

That's an idea, will maybe ask Sue although I can imagine Moonshine might not take to kindly to it!
