I am planning on taking my lorry test but wondering how any earth to go about it!

It might sound silly but do you have to apply for a previsional? and does anyone have a link to taking your theory test i cant seem to find one online?

Any info very much appreciated, I have done some Googling but getting no where! I was thinking take HGV as heard it is same as LGV or very very similar?

Trying to get onto it now as have some holiday i need to take and thought it would a good use for it.

I'm just doing mine too! You need to contact your local LGV/HGV training centre and they will send you a pack. In there will be a medical form that you need to get a doctor to fill out, this costs between £35-£70. Once you have done this you can send it along to DVLA with application for provisional. I'm doing my C (HGV) instead of my C1 (LGV) as it costs the same and you never know when you may need it, or when the DVLA will change the bloody rules again!
Once you have provisional you can have lessons - normally 5 day intensive (expensive too!) or you can do what i'm doing, 4 hr blocks (hoping to do 2 blocks then test - cheaper). You then do your theory before the test, then hey presto and fingers crossed you pass your test and happy trucking!

Well this is who i've interpreted it anyway! Got my first assessment next week!

Good Luck!

As above. Though I would recommend doing the intensive week driving and test on the Friday. It was the most dull week however by the end of the week it was second nature. Anyone I know that did thier HGV did it within the week.

Good Luck :D

Being pedantic - I think LGV and HGV are the same, it's large goods and heavy good - used to be called hgv now lgv? What was class 1 and 2 are now C+E and C, C1 is what everyone used to get anyway on their licences?

I also did the 5 days, was great as totally prepared for test. I am now a very confident and I hope competant driver in my 7.5t as trained on a 16t!!

Thanks for the repies - why isnt there such good advice on the internet?! I have phoned up and ordered a pack and booked medical! Hopefully soon i will be brumming about in my lorry! My doctors cant give me an appointment for 2 weeks which is a pain as was hoping to have it done this year (the whole test not the medical!).

Good luck with yours lisamd!

Eh? If you take your C it gives you entitlement to drive any rigid vehicle up to 32 tonnes I think? Certainly fairly hefty! C1 is any vehicle up to 7.5. It doesn't allow you to tow trailer is that what you mean Tinks81

Ahh this is helpfull i have just been looking on the internet and it is confusing, does anyone no how old you have to be before you can take ur HGV or how long u need to have passed ur normal car licence for :)

you don't have to go to your own doctor, despite what they tell you (I learnt the hard way). My surgery told me that because they had my records, I had to go to them - at a price of £95 for a ten minute examination.

When I spoke to the HGV training centre though, they were 'linked' to doctor who was doing the examinations for them for £30 a go.... Maybe ring round to make some enquiries. It really isn't a very complex medical to have.

If you go for the Big Lorry (32 tonne? test) then you can drive anything up to that level. I think Tinks81 is getting confused with the trailer test :) Before 1997 it used to be that an ordinary license gave you everything - 7.5T and trailer, but now they have to be done seperately x

Yes echo HammieHamlet about doctors! I went to the one that was linked to people who I trained with and it was £40 I think?

Hi the age is now 18 for everything brought down when driver CPC test brought in. Good luck try looking at Trucknet.com they have a forum with lots of useful tips and information on good schools to train with and help with the reversing exercise etc any other questions feel free to PM me as I have done both cat c and C +E (Artic) in the last couple of years.

Yes age is 18 for all, i've just done HGV (C) and aged 20. Yes you can drive any rigid vehicle up to 30 something tonnes. Def worth doing C over the C1. I had 4 half days training and in for test, never driven anything bigger than a 1 litre car so don't be worried.

Agree go to doctor they use not your own, much cheaper! Theory is a doddle, training company i did mine through lent me a CD with all Q's on which helped.

Good luck and enjoy :-)

Just done my lgv, passed 3rd time lucky! I did a 4 day intensive course with test on day 5 for 1st test then did 2nd with no more training and the. For 3rd I did another 1/2 day of training!

If you have an iPhone you can get an app for the theory test as it is 100 questions and they are about arctic and ridged.

Good luck

Hubby just did his (failed though). He couldn't get a doctors appointment with his own GP who incidentally would have charged double the price of the GP he found. Went to different GP for his medical - £50. Booked and passed his theory. Then did the intensive training, 4 days driving with test on the 4th day - £1,099!! Failed and is going to rebook test with half a days training before - £300!! Don't know if this has been said before but I am pretty certain you have to do your Class 2 before your Class 1. Good luck.

Im in the process of doing mine right now!

You need to apply for a provisional and if you are doing your Class 2 rigid make sure you apply for C and C1 you will need both on your licence even though its just one test! You will need to do your medical before you apply and send it with your provisional application. You will need to provide the doc with the forms which you can downlaod off the DVLA website.

The theory is done it two parts. One is a 100 question multiple choice and i recommend you get the practice CDrom as it will make your life much easier (get it off amazon .... much cheaper!) the second part is the hazard perception which i think was around 17 clips - very similar to the car test just more of them! You will need to pass both of these before you are considered to have passed your theory.

Then obv there is your practical test, most companies offer a four day course with your test at the end. But make sure you ring around as you will probably find prices and packages differ greatly! I have managed to find one that offers a 3 day course with a CPC included and its miles cheaper than other places than only offer the driving course!

Also the CPC is compulsary for dirvers wanting to take the test under 21. IMO its all a money making ploy and a waste of time but alass the powers that be demand we do it! It involves 7 'case studies' which are pretty much theory test questions just frazed differently. There is no revision material for this you just have to book the test and turn up. The second part is a pratical walk around done at the test centre. Your driving instrutor should be able to provide training for this and it usually consists of a two hour course in the morning followed by the test in which you pretty much just walk round the lorry and point to things (you dont even start the engine!) Its all very much common sense!

So once you have completed all of this and many ££££ later happy trucking!

But in all seriousness i cant wait to finish mine (just got to do the practical test!) and think despite the money it is well worth having and i wish you good luck!

I hope this has helped :)

Im glad i wasnt the only special one then not finding what i wanted on the internet ;)

Thanks for the info everyone, I think I will try and find another doctors as mine has a 2 week wait list, will probably involve 1/2 day holiday and is £100.

Think im going to go with the intensive training as really need all the help i can get. I am thinking cheaper than changing the lorry. Good luck to everyone else taking theirs :)
