Now i am planning to buy a larger lorry, 7.5 tonne.

I need to take my HGV test. I understand you need to take a theory first. Has anybody got any experience of doing this? And if so, is it hard?

I'm based in Cheshire, so if anybody can recommend any good places to take lessons it would be greatly appreciated

Hi, i am also in cheshire, and i want to do my LGV. I have found a place that will arrange the medical, theory, min 30 hours lessons, and test. Lessons can be intensive over 4/5 days. For £800 and odd. They do HGV too. Cannot think of webby but have it written down, will post/ pm when ive found it.
 
I had to do mine so i could drive my lorry, the only thing i will suggest is if your over 21 do your class 2 instead of just the 7.5 tonne test as this will allow you to drive anything ridged and who knows what the furture will how so deffo worth it. I did mine and it was easy

I'm in cheshire and did my HGV about 7 years ago. At the time the class C was the same price as the C1 so I took the view I may as well do the full class C as you never know when you may need to drive something bigger than a 7.5 ton.

The theory was the same format as the car one a mutiple choice questions jobby. You can buy a book with all the questions and answers for HGV off amazon I just learnt them all and passed with 100% but honestly cant remeber any of the stuff in it as it talks about air lines and loads etc... but I suppose it is aimed at commercial lorry drivers not horsebox drivers

You will also need to have a medical which was about £60 when I did mine, your own doctor can do it and mine laughed when I turned up and said he was used to dealing with 'fat old men' so didnt think it was fair to charge £60 so did it for £40

I did my training with http://www.nctraining.co.uk/ and highly recommend them. They took me out for a half hour assement so they could judge how many training days I needed before I did my test. I did 4 full days and then did my test on the friday, which I failed 1st time because of nerves

The guy who trained me was really nice and we drove for miles they are not tight on distance which was great as I have heard of some places that limit the number of miles you drive in a day! Also its worth mentioning that you can either learn in your own lorry or use one of theirs...I used one of theirs thought it would be better to crash one of theirs than crash mine

Not sure where other people have taken theres, but I took mine in Wrexham, and out of alot of girls I know I & most others failed a number of times, I ended up getting lots of my training free as my instructors couldn't understand why i was being failed, but Wrexham are (were) very anti girls (esp those taking it to drive a horsebox) so if you do take it, try & avoid mentioning horses, as certainly in Wrexham it was a no no (one examiner even put his test sheets on the floor after about 200 yards when I made the mistake of telling him I was learning to drive my lorry, he then failed me on something so odd my instructors had no idea what was going on!)

Actually driving the lorry is no harder than a car & in someways is easier as you can see so much more that is going on in front of you, Also, if you are over 21 definitly take your class 2, its hardly any extra & is a really useful thing to have on your CV (you never know when you might need to get a Job as a trucker & they are always in short supply! Also if you are a girl under a certain age (can't remember) you are a minority & may be eligible for a grant, which is very useful
 
I did mine at North Manchester HGV and cannot recommend them enough. They organised my medical, theory and test. I had a week of intensive lessons too

My parents live in Appleton I grew up there but live in Northwich now so not a million miles away....small world these chat forums
