Just wondering what companies people have used for their HGV training?

MY OH is looking at taking his HGV licence and we've been looking at companies that offer the full training and the exams for an all-inclusive price. He has a full-time job with limited flexibility when he can take time off, so we're looking at a company who can be flexible with when he does the training (and if they can offer weekend training that's even better!).

We're based in North Oxfordshire, but would consider training anywhere in the midlands (Oxon, Bucks, Northants, Glous, W.Midlands, Warks etc). Would be good if the training could be tailored to horseboxes.

He got a quote from Advantage HGV (nationwide company) but just read some bad reviews of that online, so would appreciate any recommendations?

Hi I did my HGV training with a company based near Enstone (north Oxford). I can't remember what they were called but I will look through my papers when I get home from work.

I did their recommended four full consecutive days of training with one other person and took my test on the fifth day.

We both passed so I can thoroughly recommend them.

good luck to your OH

Mine was based is north Derbyshire/south yorks so not much good for you really – but other than location they were great!! I did my training over 2 weekends and then just had 1 day off to do my test. Not sure if anyone would tailor it to horseboxes though?

Ooo if you could let me know their name (was it Rollright Training Solutions? Just googled HGV training and Enstone and they came up).

Do you happen to remember roughly how much it cost? Prices I've sen so far vary from £700-1000.

Thanks...would be a little bit far to travel, so not ideal.

We've found a couple of firms that tailor stuff to horseboxes, e.g. includes training in what regular checks to do specific to horseboxes (and training in how to correctly load and unload horses...which for my OH who is non-horsey might be an extra bonus!).

Just looking at EasyasHGV now - has anyone used them?

Very interested in this thread. I am going to Reading to do a driving assesment tomorrow. They seemed nice on the phone and were recommended by a friend but were a little pushy and its around 1050 so very expensive. The same person also said there was an ok place near abbingdon.

the going rate is around 750 to 1000 for a 5 day course with the test on the last day. That wont be horsebox related though, just enough to pass the dvla test

Yes, you did better with your googling than I did. I thought it was a company called Rollright but couldn't find them - could just be my work's firewall.

I did my test about 6 years ago and is was about £700. I was recommended to use Rollrights by a few people who had their HGV test as they are very good with people doing their test to drive a horsebox - appararently not all companies are as good. You have to drive quite differently to how you would if you were driving horses though to pass your test.

Hi I suggest you look on the trucknet forum as there is a list of recommended schools and lots of helpful advice on different gear boxes and the correct DVLA procedure to do thing try not to use a brooker as they often charge you more and then farm you out to local providers! Probably best to forget that you want to drive a horse box when your learning as for a test they are keen on you making progress and using brakes, totally at odds how you will drive with a horse on (use gears to slow take smooth lines and avioid harsh accelerating etc) Good luck
