Ok ,this may sound a bit paranoid but do you ever worry about your dog being stolen? Ive heard some disturbing reports recently of dogs being 'stolen to order' from peoples cars:eek:. I have recently become the proud owner of a lovely Lhasa Apso who was a show dog and stud dog (so worth a fair ammount of money probably) and now worry about leaving him in the car when i pop into the supermarket for example.

Do you think im being paranoid? Do you worry about this and what do you do if you want to pop into Tesco and your pooch is in the car!?:)

Nope I worry all the time, I will not leave my dogs in my 4x4, but I will leave them in doggy van if im in ear shot, because they cannot be seen and my rotti is usually in there and she looks terrifying to an outsider, I guard my whippets with my life and leave them knowhere on show without me.

Dogs are stolen all the time, and there is nothing worse than the worry you suffer when they are gone, better be safe than sorry, I persoanlly woulg get him a small carrier so you can conceal him in it and place him in the back or cover the carrier with a blanket.

Personally I hate leaving my dogs anywhere, greyhounds are incredibly steal-able as people always think they can be used as working dogs, so I will only go into the supermarket for max 5 mins if they are in the car with me! I always park in a well-lit well-populated area of the car park, and obviously I lock them in :) Other than that they are left safely at home or are with me 100% of the time :)

Yep always worry .. though depends who I have with me .. a couple of mine try to get through the window at anyone who is close (GSD's) and would I imagine scare the bejesus out of most would be tea leaf ... however I still don't leave them if I have any choice including when they are in the dog trailer.

Given that people have tried to pinch my mum's shih tzu TWICE from her garden... no you're not paranoid at all.
The garden's surrounded by a wall with a wrought iron person sized gate so she's not exactly easy to spot in there!
Both times mum's been in (Fliss is never outside without someone being home) - on one occasion she was in the shower (not sure who would have been more scared :o :p) and the other dogs (GSD & Boxer) went ballistic alerting her to what was happening. Fliss is tiny by shihtzu standards (pretty certain that she's part chihuahua somewhere) so people always think she's a pup.

No, you're not paranoid! In fact your paranoia is realism:D I never leave my dogs alone anywhere - apart from securely locked in the house! The garden is enclosed by six feet fencing and the gate has a padlock. I hate seeing dogs tied up outside shops etc, just waiting to be nicked by some low life. At a show I went to, a competitors dogs was tied in the back of their car, boot up, owners sitting in the front seats & some scumbag took the dog! You wouldn't leave your handbag lying about unattended & my dogs are more precious than the contents of my handbag!:)

My sister has a particularly smart JRT, she says if she takes her to a county show she gets stalked by people. I will not leave my dogs outside a shop, even my village shop. They are both soppy enough to let someone steal them (Small Lurcher and Whippet). They are never left unattended in the garden either.

Same as the rest of you, she doesn't get left *anywhere*. She is left at home sometimes, with the door double locked and the alarm on, or she's with me or OH. I don't even leave her locked in the car, she's so small she'd be easy to lift through a broken window. Not worth the risk - I know her breeder and her mum was stolen for 4 days when she was a similar age :( Fortunately some posters, a reward, and a chat with some neighbourhood kids got her back. Terrifying.
