My 36 year old has colic. It was picked up by my uncle when he did not eat breakfast and the yard called the vet immediately.

I was at work so did not arrive until after the vet had left. Apparently he had an impaction a long way back which she cleared. She then drenched him with water and electrolites. He also had injected pain killers.

When I arrived he was quiet but not in pain, he has only done one small poo since. I have spent all afternoon grooming him in the sun. Rang the vet back at 2 to tell her he had not eated or pooed again. She said leave him till 5 and ring back.

Have just popped home to get changed ready for an all nighter if necessary. Will keep updating on any replies on my phone.

He currently is standing in his stable, not obviously in pain but quiet. He has not eaten or drunk anything since last night.

The vet said he could have a bit of grass but he's not interested.

Any ideas to tempt him to eat a bit, which is what the vet wants, or positive stories.

I'm in bits I have owned him for 31 years.

Would he like a warm bran mash perhaps? That can often tempt them to eat.

Really sorry to hear what's happening. I expect he's feeling a bit dull and out of sorts after the vet's visit this morning. You can't blame him.

Thinking of you and Rocky and hoping he starts to feel better soon.

Fingers crossed for poor Rocky

My old lad had it recently, only passed a small amount of poo & didn't eat for 12 hours after the onset but he is as right as rain now. Rockys' probably just feeling a bit rough from the colic and wants to rest :o

Sending lots of positive healing vibes. We went through this with our Fell baby earlier this year. He was also very quiet for the rest of the evening but he came through it and made a full recovery.

On my phone now. Thanks for all the good wishes. Yes they passed a tube up his nose. It bled for ages but stopped now. He also hS really bad breath which he has never had prior to today and I would have noticed. Vet said to syringe in a bite and let her know if gets any worse

Everything crossed. I had a pony with impaction comic it went of for 5 days I was constantly putting parrafin down him and trying to tempt him with Foos, the weather was awful at the time so couldn't take him out the barn, the turning point came on a sunny say I took him out and he scoffed the really lush grass and everything started moving again.

Vibes for Rocky, poor boy probably still feels rather sore from both the colic and the tubing. I would not worry too much if he does not want to eat yet, just keep him comfy and when he feels less sore he should want to pick at something, I usually try a wet feed, mash or sugar beet, to help with hydration a few slices of apple may be tempting.

A few months ago, my 31 year old pony had colic. Got the vet to her quickly as it didn't seem too bad and she was uncomfortable rather than in pain. She didn't poo for 36 hours but is fine again now. Hope Rocky will be okay.

Lots of vibes. Having been through this myself recently with Meg, it's a frightening time, especially with age an issue.

Meg normally eats anything going but refused all feed.

She reluctantly ate a bran mash with warm water. We kept at that that slowly introduced chaff to bulk it out.

She refused hay and haylage so we bought D&H 'Just Grass' which looked awful, similar to pine needles, but she found it strangely palatable and began to eat that too.

Hope he feels better soon xx

Loads of <<<<<<<vibes>>>>>> for both Rocky and you. It sounds as though it's going to be a long night!

We always give a bran mash (originally on vet's advice) with plenty of molasses and a bit of salt. Mix the bran with lots of just boiled water, so that it is sloppy, cover it with a cloth until it is cooled and serve. The bran 'cooks' itself and most horses find it palatable. The molasses and salt help the palatability and the molasses also helps everything to move through the digestive system.

Good luck!

My horse had colic at New Year. He went completely off his food and the way I got him eating again was warm bran mash. Keep the bute up as he is obvoiusly not going to fancy eating if he is in pain. I have a friends who has a pony that is prone to compaction colic, she would recommend Epsom Salts in the bran mash. Need to basically get stuff in that gets everything moving again, easier said than done I know. I have been there rejoicing when a poo emerges after hours of waiting.
My very best wishes to you, I Hope Rocky picks up quickly.
