I thought I would post this as I thought it would be interesting to see the results...

I am going to start horse-shopping soon. I live in Hampshire and will be searching all over the UK for 'The One'. However, the biggest problem is horses at the other end of the country. So my thought was this...

Would anyone be willing to take a look at a horse that was near to them on behalf of another HHOer?

This is really to see if a horse is nice and worth someone driving to the other end of thee country to take a look at, not for the requester to go ahead & buy without seeing. I hope you see what I mean! Also, 'reasonable distance' would be for each person to decide, eg 1 person might think 20 miles is ok, whereas another might not.

Thanks!

Yes I would be happy too, being someone who travelled by land sea and air to find the right horse, qnd probably did over 1000 miles, I would have REALLY appreciated someone I trusted perhaps going to give the horse the once over, ie to check it had 4 legs, was alive and not a wild nutter, before making the long trip to see the horse myself.

ObviouslyI would have still tried the horse myself as normal, but considering how many sellers lie about the basics such as height and sex, I imagine it could have saved me a few trips!

Yes,do not mind having a look if they are nearby!
I went to look at a horse for Weezy the other month..it was very near my Uni so it wasn't a problem. The horse was very obviously not right so it did save W a long trip to go and see it...

I'd happily go and look at a horse, take a few videos and photos and give my opinion. I'm in North Wales btw if you ever want to try a horse there! lol I'd happily drive 1 - 2 hours to look at a horse for someone if I was closer than them.

Gosh! That was alot more positive than I thought! That is really good to hear. It is meant really as a preliminary check as PF & C_D say.

I just think that there is nothing worse than trekking to the other end of the country to find a 12HH 2 YO filly when you wanted a 16HH 7 YO!!

Incidentally, I would. But it would only be to check it isn't madder than a box of frogs and only had 3 legs!!

I am happy to do it but prefer to have met the HHOer in person first so I know how well they can ride. After having met them and watched them ride only then could I view horses.

IMO far too many people kid themselves about what they want and how good they are.

I personally would not want the responsibility as I dont think I have enough experience!
However, I am horse hunting myself, have been for ages now, and really wish I could have found someone to take a look at some nice horses for sale further afield than I was prepared to travel. I have spent hours in the car, driven hundreds of miles, and wasted weekends when I could have been out on our other horses, only to find the horse I have gone to see was not suitable. ( to put it politely! ) I am now reluctant to travel far at all, I have become so disheartened - there is a lovely horse for sale about 2 1/2 hours drive away in West Sussex, but the thought of a five hour trip plus the time spent there is putting me off - any offers?!

As 2008 said, she has been to see one for me, as has Ottinmeg - neither were right and both HHOers saved me a long distance journey and it worked out very well for me! lec was going to go look at another for me but once I got further pics I decided it wasn't quite right either. I would happily do it for someone else, but I think lec raises a valid point re: competence.

I definitely would. And wish I had someone to do the same for me when I was looking. I'm in Dorset and went to Nottingham twice only for it to fail the vet. Eventually found my boy in West Wales. The whole process was a nightmare and the woman I got him from was a complete b*tch!

didnt someone mention before about setting up a network to do this very thing ?
i never rode the one i went to look at for weezy as im a crap rider but i did put my daughter on it . the horse was lovely ,had a great temperament BUT wasnt the horse in the photos of the advert that had caught weezys eye in the first place so did save her a wasted journey.
i think the main thing people could do however confident /knowlegable they are with horses is to check its as described in the ad.see it ridden even if they dont ride it themselves and take videos, photos etc.. i took video and photos of the horse from all angles ,even close ups of its feet etc so lou could get a good idea of what it was like.
id certainly view for someone else if they wanted one looked at

No, I wouldn't.
I've bought horses for other people and riding schools before...acting as an advisor....but before I would be willing to assess a horse, I'd want to assess the rider. Only then would I have a good idea whether they would be compatible.

PS Would you trust a daemon like me looking for horses for you?

I wouldnt. Simply because what I like someone else may not, they would still have to go view the horse anyway. If I was buying I would make the effort to go myself.

Also goes for the experience/credentials of the person checking the horse for you!
I may be willing to check a horse very local to me, just to check it was as described in the advert and take some pictures but no more.

I think that is as much a can be expected, really - and maybe seeing it ridden or trotted up to check for obvious problems
