Hi all,
I haven't posted on here before, so hello to all! :D
I'd appreciate some advice/experience/opinions. I'm currently studying a subsidiary diploma in horse management and don't know whether to stay on to do a second year at college to get an extended diploma or whether to look for an apprenticeship now? If anyone has any knowledge of whether college diplomas or apprenticeships are better?

Hi I think for all vocational careers employers prefer practical experience in the industry over college diplomas. Working on the college yard won't count for much because there's too much health and safety regulations slowing you down, which in the real world yard owners will expect you to ignore! I'd go with the apprenticeship. Practical experience on a working yard will get you further in a career as a groom than a college course will.
 
Agree would definitely go for practical hands on experience/training. What about trying to find a yard that would put you through your stages/NVQ?
 
Definitely practical. I got a working pupil position at 18 & in the same time others went to college I got far more experience & knowledge through being hands on. Would recommend the same to anyone wanting to work with horses.
 
I done a year at hartpury then got a WP position, while the college gave me a load of knowledge but the hands on was worth more TBH.
