Hi, i'm Rach, and i've been around horses most of my life and worked with them in the past. I currently have a horse on share, but have found myself in a position to buy my own... I will still be keeping up my share horse, but unfortunately there is no space at the livery yard near my current share horse, so i'm going to be keeping my new filly whom i'm getting in September, in a field a few miles away from my other horse... Which is fine. I don't mind. But personally i haven't ever really kept a horse in a field 24/7 and when i did, i was only 6 years old and my mum managed all that stuff! I've got a rough idea about how i'm going to manager her, and all that. But i am questioning how i am going to keep hay fresh during the winter months... There is no field shelter, yet... Apparently one is going up, but i have no idea when as i'm renting the field through the lady who currently has her horse in it, so that she can keep hold of the field when i leave. I know in previous years she has just thrown a round bale in. But i worry about it spoiling and being wasted if my filly won't eat it... I am on a bit of a budget, but i'm happy to look into any products i can buy which will keep hay dry? I'm wanting to buy a round bale or two. I can probably get hold of some pallets if needs be, but ideally i want one to covered, i know i can already get hold of some covers which will keep the hay i don't want to be used, but for the one she will be eating, what can you guys suggest? Anything you guys use which keeps your hay well during winter? Please suggest things, as i'm a bit stumped, i've googled stuff, but can't seem to find much apart from a large haynet for the entire bale or tarp over the top of it and a pallet underneath?
Any help and advice would be great!
