I am hoping that a someone may know of a good riding school around yelverton but i dont want the type where you just do pony ride as i am interested in learning how to put tack on and off and learning to ride correctly hope someone might know of a good school.:)

Unfortunately there are no Schools in the area anymore, I think the closest would be Fitzworthy at Cornwood. I've no idea if they are any good.

I think there is also one at Saltash and of course there is St Leonards in Launceston but these are little further away.

Try Bickleigh Barracks, they have a civilian run pony club & riding school. Apart from that there aren't any at all in the area.

Wow talk about bringing back memories. More years ago than I care to remember I used to ride at Crossroads which was on the way to Crapstone and I think their was a riding school next to the Moorland Links Hotel. The hacking was amazing. Sorry but not much use to op but lots of fantastic memories for me.

thank you for your replys fingers crossed i find somewhere as my daughter and son and myself are all wanting to learn i have beautiful memories as a child on a riding holiday near to dartmoor, i want my children to experience it as well :):)

I think you may mean Crossways! Brings back fantastic memories for me too but unfortunately it's a livery yard now.

The stables at Bickleigh Barracks do ride out on the moors as well as having weekends & camps for their pony club. The children also get involved in all the yard duties & seem to have a great time.

Probably same time as me then as I'm 41 this year & started there when I was 6. Used to ride Pippit and my dad used to ride Kerry and Deal. Were they there when you were there?

it's totally changed now ( as you would expect after all that time ) but I hire their school every week so still go up there.

It was run by a man called Clive and his girlfriend Diana was also around. The horses and ponies I remember were Bracken and Spell, 2 naughty fun ponies and Winston and Charlie.

That doesn't ring any bells with me but tbh I can't remember any of the horses apart from the ones we had direct involvement with. I used to go up twice a week after school, once for a hack & once for a lesson in the school where the pony I used to ride would regularly jump out & go back to his box - sometimes with me & sometimes without me!

It's a livery yard now which is a shame as there are no decent riding schools in the area apart from the one in Bickleigh. If I ever win the lottery I'll set one up :D

I keep my horse near to Crossways livery yard, it is a fantastic location with the wonderful Dartmoor right on our doorstep and the most perfect yard to keep my boy in, it could not be better!!

( I took my daughter to Crossways riding school when she was 8 , she is know 24!!

Did crossways crapstone do riding holidays 25 years ago i rode a horse called bay leaf iwas 12 yrs old at the time remember the horse i had for the week on holiday but can not rememeber the name of riding school just remember it was on the moors had such a wonderful time. Could not carry on with the horse riding as my sisters did not enjoy it heart breaking for a child who was horse crazy and still is :)

I'm really not sure but it's possible as there wasn't any others in the area, even then!

Good luck with finding somewhere, I do think Bickleigh is your best bet as they are very geared up for children and put a lot of things on during school holidays. I haven't been there for a while but they had some lovely horses for adult riders too.

I know the management has changed since I was last there so I can't comment on how it's run now but it's definately worth a look around.

I tried clearbrook riding stables and they have now become a livery its the insurance they are having to pay that is making them close will have to start looking futher afield now
