Hi. i am wondering if anyone can help me. I am considering getting a new bit for my horse. I have had him 8 years now and after breaking him in he seemed to get stronger and stronger! He is a very excitable 15'2 Welsh sec d x new forest who was cut very late so has a massive neck. I have found he went best in a jointed gag and have ridden him in this for many years although i still didn't have much breaks! I tried our first xc the other month and lost all control with the reins on the bottom hole. I am currently getting back into jumping with him after a accident i had and im finding in the gag he is not picking his front up at all... but plowing through them no matter what height, so i did a test seeing if it was the bit by putting him in my dressage loose ring french link and he went lovely ( no control) but picking his legs up and flowing not cat leaping! But cause i had no control he got over excited and had me off and i broke my wrist. So i rang a bit lady up today and she reckons *NS TRANZ ANGLED LOZENGE ELEVATOR * but before i go and buy this bit as it is expensive. I wondered if any one here would be able to help me. Jumping spesh XC is the thing i want to get involved in. Many thanks. Sorry its a long one

I assume you are talking about riding him in a three ring Dutch gag ?? Have you tried jumping him with the reins on the top ring as it maybe that you are inadvertently hanging on rather tightly - especially given that he is strong - and this could be causing him to bury himself into the bottom of the jump? My mare did not cope at all well with the reins on the lower rings as it does give a lot of leverage and I ended up jumping her in a happy mouth loose ring snaffle.

I would suggest that you have some lessons with a good instructor and get their opinion.

In general I am a big fan of the Neue Schule bits and if you spoke to Hillary she does know her stuff.
