Hi i came to this website seeking some advice :)

My horse is a 15 year old French Trotter and he is very unbalanced and unstable in canter. Is there any exercises i can do to help him become stable in canter or should i just continue to lunge him?

Please give me some advice :)

With the best will in the world J&L, riding problems are rarely addressed over the airwaves. As Moomin says, you really do need a competent instructor or highly experienced rider, if you're to correct any faults.

Good Luck!

Hi JessandLeader.

It is always difficult to offer advice without seeing the horse and rider in question and I certainly wouldn't want to recommend anything in case it makes matters worse for both of you. Are you a member of your local pony club? Perhaps an instructor there can help? Or if not it would be a good idea to join. Otherwise might your parents pay for someone to come in and assess you and your pony so that you can get some exercises which really suit both of you? Lunging might not be the best answer I'm afraid!

Do be careful about what information you put on a public forum - especially when you are young. Not everybody on every website etc is going to be nice, or safe for you to interact with. Be careful about giving your age and anything like your name which might lead someone to identify you. Please be careful on line!

Hi Jess, are you the first owner of your pony following a trotting career? I have looked after trotters in the past and because of the way some are trained (not sure if it's the pacers or square going ones) they end up cantering in that unbalanced way. Some have had a harness with straps going around their legs that get them to trot with a faster and different rythm to a normal trot. I remember one we had - she had won the Scotish Queen of the Road - and whenever she tried to canter with the herd it was all disjointed and almost painful to watch.

Google retraining of trotters as riding horses. I think you will have to retrain this pony and if you could get advise from someone who does that with trotters, it's the best place to start. Maybe you can get some contact details for a trainer like that online. Good luck with it.

J&L, if you take nothing else from this thread of yours, which is of value, the lines above should be considered, and thought about! The most posters ever on this forum was a staggering 22,000 at one moment. They weren't all those who are known, and who can be trusted. You're very young and your open post could be open to abuse. BE CAREFUL!

Echo what everyone else has said about admitting no experience with high ambition and horses. The 'horse' element is so fraught with passion, opinion and ruination - but there was a member on here who broke in a young trotter, purely to ride. His trotting paces were bred into him but she succeeded in producing a nice canter and he also popped the odd fence with miles to spare. She was an experienced rider though and accepted the quality of the paces were never going to be quite the equal of non pacers, but he was ever so smooth to ride! Lovely character.

My cob was unbalanced and very fast in her canter and I really found that getting her walk, trot, transtions ect perfect before atempting canter really helped.Good luck :)
