Hi,

as you can see i'm new to this site. I'm going straight in with my problem, hoping that someone will be able to help me!

please help me re-home my beautiful horse. I have had my beautiful horse Jet for about 18 months. out of this 18 months i have ridden her about 8 times. I am a novice rider and unfortunately due to lack of knowledge at the time brought her as 'suitable for novice' which she is not. i have spoken to the YO, who thinks that Jet has psychological problems and as her canter is not mechanical that i should pts. however i have grown fond of her and love her lots. i think that she has a lot to give - just not right for me. is there anywhere that would take Jet for free as i don't want to pts. yes she has her jetism's but i think a confident patient person could be right for her.:(

The vet thinks that she has some sort of psychological problem, which can impact on her mood and work ethic, but was unable to say what however the previous owner sent her to the veterinary college and they came back with no concerns. Jet is loving, she can be extremely spooky, but i also think this has something to do with me not being that confident when out hacking. i don't want to pts, but i cannot let her waste away in a field either!

I'm assuming that if she does have psychological problems then she is a danger to ride, in which case retirement to the field sounds the best option.

So, your choices are - keep her as a long term pet or have her pts.

Sorry Mushmadabouthorses but I agree with the above ^^^^^^. I assume you tried her before buying her and also had her vetted. Was nothing evident then? And what are the psychological problems affecting her? Perhaps she suffers during her seasons and could benefit from an inplant, marble or Regumate? Has your vet considered these options? It's rare IME for a vet to claim a horse is genuinely psychologically damaged. Most problem horses are either in pain, have been mistreated or are suffering hormonal problems. Which vet college was she sent to and what were her symptoms then? What did they deduce?

Hi if you do give Jet away please take care who she goes to, some people are only out to make money, and would not think twice about selling her on to another novice.

thank you for all your prompt responses, i will certainly try Ravenswood, although i'm not sure about the light hacking bit. Jet is brilliant with my son's pony in the field so i think that she will make a good companion

When i first got her, i was sold her by a friend of a friend. Being a novice and trusting, i did not get her vetted - which i now know is a must. She was sent to the Royal Veterinary college, University of London. Unfortunately they have advised me that they are unable to share their findings and all the previous owner is telling me is that the results came back fine. I have also attempted to speak to the insurance company, as they told me that in 2005 Jet had £8,000 spent on her but without the previous owners permission they can not share this with me. I have offered Jet back to the previous owner for free and they do not want to take her back. I want to progress in my riding and have found a lovely horse to loan, which i can not do until i sort out Jet due to costs etc.... i keep thinking that i should be the responsible owner and have her pts so she can not go on and harm someone else, or be treated badly but do not have the courage and heart to do this.

Doing the right thing for your horse is not necessarily the right thing for you. If you found somewhere that was suitable for your horse and later discovered that it wasn't, and your horse was suffering as a result would that be any easier to accept? There are countless stories of people loosing their horses while on loan, or forever homes that end up being a trip to the meat man. Good luck finding a suitable solution and sorry if that's not what you want to hear.

I'm so sorry for your situation, this could so easily have been me. Don't beat yourself up about buying on trust, it's done now and you won't make that mistake again.

Sadly I think the brave thing to do for your lovely lass may be to pts, unless you or someone else can guarantee her future. If you part with her, you may later find the worry of what became of her too hard to handle.

If you do pts, don't let yourself or anyone else make you feel bad. To me it looks like the villian here is the previous owner, who's clearly hiding something. Otherwise why won't they disclose the whole history, or take her back? Poor you, you've been burdened with the responsibility of doing the right thing.

You bought a horse to ride. I don't see why you should have to spend all your money keeping an unridable horse, even though you now love her.

Whatever you decide, I hope it's for the best for you and Jet. xx

Have you told the previous owner that she will be PTS if you can't find out what happened to her in the past?
£8000 is a big insurance bill, has she been stamped loss of use?
Have you had anyone out to help you work with her in hand, and assess her?
Have you got her insured? Can you claim loss of use because of the behavioural issues?

If you have tried every other avenue then you may have to Pts. It may seem sad for Jet but she won't know what is coming and PTS may be kinder than having her passed about lots of homes because she isn't suitable to be worked, or safe. There are lots of lovely horses out there and you could be paying livery for a fun partner, not for an unsuitable relationship.
Sad for you though :(

Assuming this isn't a troll posting...

I'd suggest
- getting a saddler out to check her tack still fits (may not after all that time off even if it did to start with)
- paying an experienced professional (e.g. instructor) to bring your horse back into work, or at least rider her a few times to start getting her back into work
- if the ridden issues persist with them then you have the option of veterinary investigation/alternative training/pts/whatever
- if they don't then you can then sell Jet or loan her out to a more experienced rider.

Many (most?) horses aren't suitable for a beginner; doesn't mean they can't be happy and useful to someone else.

Assuming that this is a real story ... Please please do not give her away. If she does indeed have psychological problems she is better off being PTS as 9 times out of 10 they get worse and worse. You cannot predict what will happen to her once she is out of your hands and you may regret passing her on. She is your responibility to please either keep as a field ornament and PTS when the time is right or PTS now to secure her future. Sorry for your situation.

All of this is exactly what I was going to post! At no point as it been said that anyone experienced has tried her - apart from the YO saying she has a dodgy canter. Not all YO's are highly experienced horse people.
Get someone who really knows what they are doing to take a look at her for a start!
