Just spotted this on a facebook page, I was actually looking for an app that tracks you while out hacking or around horses alone & sends an sos alert so you can be 'rescued' when i stumbled across this..now you might not feel you are 'old enough' but it can happen to anyone & it doesn't make an appointment to do it when convenient. You may be with someone or spot someone fall, so as well as cpr if they are still conscious, this is well worth a try

and while you are on the fb page check out the Christmas tree safety lights on that cyclist - one like it flew past the yard the other morning & I have to say I could see him carry along the lane even thru dense hedges..VERY impressed!

I shall file that information away with the fact that you can perform the Heimlich manoevre upon yourself, if you choke whilst alone, with the aid of a dining chair back.
 
yep the how to survive a heart attack when alone thing is not a good move. I belong to a local group for community responders and they picked up on it very quickly and hoped that people would not be tempted to try it.
 
Honest to God, I would never knowingly post a hoax about something like this..will check out some more with a paramedic friend..I believe it is not meant as a cure & will not stop or reverse but is thought to retain some kind of cardiac output while the person is mid cardiac arrest. The BBC wouldn't have done an article on it if it was a hoax? I did check...I think it is simply to get the person time till the ambulance arrives..I for one would try anything, if for the simple reason that concentration & focus induce calm rather than panicking & so could help you..worth a shot,I'd say. The heart foundation commented on the bbc link as inconclusive evidence..but have you ever tried administering cpr on yourself?

v interesting about the heimlich maneouvre tho..the amount of kamikazi sweet corn that have made attempts on my life recently, anything like this is worth knowing!

No idea what BBC link you mean but it absolutely is a hoax and a very old one at that... Have a look at the Snopes link... It is based on flawed knowledge of heart attacks, arrest, irregular heart beats and a selection of treatment options called vagal manoeuvres and can cause harm if used incorrectly...

The British Heart Foundation specifically state "...cough CPR should never be used as a first aid tecnique" (PDF - BHF Cardiac Arrest Info

The only difference between this hoax and the last time I saw it running around the internet is that the "then drive the 5m to the hospital" type comment that used to be on there has been removed... :rolleyes:
 
Is it possible to ammend or delete this thread OP? The hi viz stuff is good - but the heart attack stuff is a hoax and potentially a very dangerous one. I know you didn't know this and posted it here in all innocence. But it might we wise to try to remove or ammend that reference?

I wouldn't panic Sahara. People can see it was a genuine mistake.
