Just went on BHS site they are doing a survey about Hi Viz. I filled it in and this was the final screen:
"Hi-viz Survey 2011
Wearing hi-viz equipment means a vehicle driver can see you up to three seconds earlier and take appropriate action to avoid causing you problems.
In three seconds a car travelling at 30mph will cover 40 metres which is the length of a dressage arena!
You should wear hi-viz at all times of the day and all year round, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions it makes you more visible.
Shouldn't you do everything possible to keep your horse safe?
You should also wear hi-viz off-road because military helicopter pilots can see you up to half-a-mile sooner and therefore avoid flying directly over you. Other helicopter pilots can see you even earlier and take avoiding action.
If you are unfortunate and have a fall in which you are injured, wearing hi-viz items will make you more visible to passers by, air ambulance crew and searching police helicopters. Your rescue will be much quicker.
If you fall and your horse is loose, the horse will be safer if he/she is wearing hi-viz items as well, as they will be seen more readily"
Think that says it all really! They also have a site for reporting any accidents or incidents (road traffic/dogs/low aircraft/fire works etc) so they can have accurate statistics in campaigning for improvements in safety etc. I wasn't aware of this (probably because I don't read the magazine properly!) and touch wood will not have to use it but will definitely keep it in mind. http://www.horseaccidents.org.uk/
