Why are people so so stupid?? Ive just past a woman on a horse in the dark on the road. Its a fast busy country road. She had hi viz jacket on :) but no lights :( and she was on the phone :mad:. I could barely see her and I was coming the opposite way.
Of course I too have answered calls whilst riding but not on a fast road in the dark.
Why dont people realise they cant be seen

Because they always think it wont happen to them. You ought to have to stopped and made her aware of how dangerous she was being, not just to herself but also her horse and other road users...

I rode out this afternoon, around 2-m so not nearing dark but was dingy.

I donned a delightful new fluro pink padded waistcoat - The rest of the yard were in fits of giggles - I thought it looked ok actually!

As YO have now made it a rule anyone seen hacking out without Hi-vi when it is required poo picks for a week - That'll get them wearing it!

This morning my friend and I out hacking, both wearing hi viz, had a black transit van go past us on a lane which is only wide enough for one vehicle and something small-ish alongside - luckily our horses fitted in the gap...there was no verge, while not going fast he didn't stop or crawl and to top it all was on his mobile phone...

When riding grey horses out on hacking with absolutely no roadwork AT ALL, literally the yard is on the edge of 6000 acres of woodland (arent i lucky :p) i dont wear hi viz. please dont kill me. but i wear a helmet and body protector, with bright pink (i mean BRIGHTTT) hat silk and body protector has reflective piping on it . Im always getting sarky comments on my hat silk, seems some dont have the same passion for pink as me :(
But i also ride another persons pony, and never ride without high viz. Leg bands, quarter sheet, bridle bands, and because she likes to shove her head in the air alot i also put bridle bands on her martingale :D got some pink high viz brushing boots today, and shall be using them tomorrow :) We cross a reallyyy fast road, and other than that theres only about 5 mins road work, but i know that accidents can happen anywhere, being 5 mins away from the yard isnt going to stop an accident from happening. Its quite a posh area, and loads of people like to show off in their fast cars, and however 'bombproof' ponyo may be, you cant tell the future, and i dont know when shes going too randomly spook, sometimes a gust of wind under her tail can cause her to spin her bum out into the road, some times she spooks going past the hunt kenals, sometimes she has crazy days. At the end of the day she is an animal, and has her own mind so isnt 100% predictable. And i dont want her to die or get hurt in an accident because i love her. If she got hurt and i felt like there was more i could have done to prevent it i would hate myself for it.

On my last ride of the year last week (winter holiday, fair weather rider sydrome!) I put on my reflective jacket as weather was gloomy. Admittingly I don't wear it as often as I should, but iam working on getting a better habit. What really took the P was as it as not a common sight to see me as ''Blackpool lights'', the neighbours laughed! That deosn't set a good example really.
But, I will rise above the laughter, and in the spring, I will continue to ride in it.

I always wear hi-viz when hacking but in this rider's defence she may well have been caught out - I got stuck out in the dark once (fortunately we were fairly near home) after a hacking route took longer than usual when the horse misbehaved spectacularly halfway round a circular route with no shortcuts home. Scary, and I try to leave more time now to account for this sort of thing - of course, the person in question here may just be a numpty! :D

I always where a hi-vis vest and it annoys me when other people don't on roads, it takes a split second for an accident to happen and you have more of a chance of being seen with a hi- vis! and even more with this vest, i've just brought one as where i am drivers are pig headed well they might think twice now i brought this! haha

Regardless if we use any roads at all, I think we should always wear hi viz. It's my worst fear of falling off in the forestry alone and not being found for hours.
