Hi viz - writing on the back or not?

Hi all.

I've finally given up on my beloved pink tabard, and need to get something new for the 'summer'. My current tabard says 'Please Pass Wide and Slow Thankyou', but I wear a jacket without writing in the winter.

What do people think? I can't decide whether the message is useful, or whether by the time anyone is close enough to read it, they've either slowed down or they haven't...

I have one without writing and one with writing. TBH I don't think that it makes any difference because the writing is too small to read easily (mine's also please pass wide and slow).
 
Not at all necessary as far as I am concerned. :)

All a road user needs is to be able to see you in good time, the message is irrelevant.

I like the hi-viz gloves, drivers can see your hand signals more clearly then, whether that is "Slow down/come on pass me/thank you/idiot" or whatever.

I've just bought a pink vest with "please pass wide and slow" on it, my thinking being that some people, especially the younger 'townier' people are not even aware that you should pass wide and slow and come far too close without realising the danger.
I'm just trying to educate people. :) without being bossy.
 
I bought a bespoke one from ebay and it says 'Thank-you for slowing down'. I figured it would save my hand from constantly thanking at least those cars behind me and it's polite and gets the slow down for horses message across subtley :D
 
I think the message is relevant as it instructs drivers how to pass safely. I also opted for pass wide and slow as its one thing being seen, but if the driver doesnt have the sense or has not been educated to pass properly they may still come too close or fast.
 
I live in an area where there are a lot of tourists who are not necessarily used to seeing a horse on the road and may not be aware of the need to pass a horse wide and slow - so I have this on the back of my tabard. I find it has made a difference on the whole. You will still get the odd nutter who ignores you though!
 
I'm just making some personalised Hi Viz jackets and polo shirts and most of them say 'Please Pass Wide & Slow', and one says' Caution - Young Horse but some people prefer plain :)
 
It's up to the individual all mine are plain for me it's about being seen and that's all I not into instructing drivers ,anywayi think in most cases the writing is too small to read easily unless you are huge.

I was advised by the BHS not to use a tabard with the words 'caution young horse' as it's seen as perhaps admitting liability in the event of an accident.

Yes, I wouldn't have that wording myself but it isn't my job to question the customers' decisions so I print or embroider whatever they ask me for :o I have had some very odd names/messages I can tell you :p
 
Yes dont worry I dont care what anyone says they work I am safe end off.

The one "please pass wide and slow" I often got asked if thats me or the horse!!
