Hi guys, i've been a lurker on here for ages but thought i'd join as i would like some advice. I'd really really like to get a puppy soon, and I intend to ask my boss if it could come to work with me as we're in a small office with a little back yard. I'm not convinced he's going to say yes, so i was wondering if there was any plan b's? Does everyone who has a puppy not work/work from home and therefore stay with it all day? Or is it best to just forget the whole idea?

thanks in advance

Hello and welcome!

If you can't take the dog to work with you the best thing is to arrange for a dog walker. When the puppy is very young he/she can just come, let him out for toilet and play with him for half an hour, when he is older he/she can take him out for a walk. If you are away for about 8-9 hours you could need someone to come by 1-2 times a day for the puppy, but only once for walking a mature dog (provided of course that you also walked the dog when you came back from work). Alternatively if you can get away from work for lunch that could also work well.

In persuasion, tell him that we have between 10 and 17 dogs in our office building on any given day and that they are all very well behaved

This ranges from terriers, to collies, to spaniels.

They are a fantastic stress reliever and are general office assets

ETA - you should offer to get public liability insurance, this is included on some vets policies or you can get it on its own. It's a condition of having our dogs at work.

It would have to be the right breed, that's the thing. Henry does cope ok for a day one his own, but I think if it were a constant thing he would get fed up pretty quickly.

You could always look at taking a slightly older dog on if it comes to it, although you won't get the cute puppy stage, they do have their advantages - less chewing / housetraining! By older, I don't mean old, but maybe 12 - 18 months?

We have one barky dog, which is being worked upon, one terrier that barks at other dogs but is well behaved in the office and one Henry

The general rule is that you can't have a huge number of dogs in each room, you can't have more dogs than people in case there is a fire and that they are supposed to stay close to your desk, so almost all are on leads. Most of them just sleep all day - even Henry does, he just likes having visitors!

It actually works really well, and isn't too chaotic really...
