My OH fed the horses their breakfasts and mucked out this morning before going to work! I went out about 10 to ride, and Flo was hiccuping. About one every couple of minutes. Didn't seem to worry her at all, she was v relaxed and her normal self. I taked her up and took her into the school to ride her. She was fine to ride and didn't seem to hiccup while I was riding, but she did it a couple of times (though not as often) when I brought her back up to the yard.

I gave her fresh water, some soaked hay and a little (very sloppy) feed, but she doesn't seem dehydrated or anything per se - can pinch skin on her neck and it fell straight back into place. I will go out and given them their tea soon, and hopefully it has stopped completely now.

I will ring the vet on Monday morning and mention it to him, but is there anything I should be doing in the meantime? or should I be worried??

Thanks for any help.

Have her hiccups stopped?

My foal had hiccups a few times & it didnt seem to do him any harm. He just look rather confused as to who kept jerking his body forwards! They went after a few hours.

Thanks for that - yes they stopped, and no sign today at all so maybe it was a one off!!

I was worried yesterday though - texted a friend (whose OH is a retired large animal vet) and he had never heard of it so that paniced me rather

Anyone else heard of it???

one of mine used to get hiccups when he first arrived as he ate too quickly. He always looked so surprised - occasionally he would hiccup and a tiny high pitched whinny would come out as well!
I would massage his throat but they went away of their own accord.

One of my foals had hiccups until he was a yearling usually after nursing and after feeding. The vet supposed foals could hiccup but didnot actually know. He grew out of it and is three years old now. He did suffer a bad choke episode on a particlar brand of horse mix so I did wonder if it was his particular physiology maybe a bit narrow through the internal bits. It is the cutest thing to see in a foal as it surprises them!!!!

Thanks guys - slightly reassured that she isn't going to keel over and expire (from the hiccups anyway)

That actually sounds like choke rather than hiccups tbh
