Can someone shed any light on the fact that I was checking the Hickstead results and David McPherson was riding Finbar (robert Whittaker) and Naomi (Nick Skelton) in the Derby Trial today. I like David and have always felt a little sorry for him as he tends to bring some good horses through the ranks and then they go to top names when they reach Grade A.

I'm sure someone else will know the 100% accurate reason, but here goes.

Finbarr V is not owned by RW, as far as I knew DMcP used to ride him on a regular basis but was busy / injured (or something) and the horse was then "lent" to RW for a while.

Not sure about Naomi though.

Many horses are taken in the Derby trial by another rider if their own rider is away at another show (usually abroad) then the usual rider flies to Gatwick on the Sunday to ride in the DFS Derby as the horse has "started" & qualified for the big class. Clever aint it!

Exactly the same happened previously, with Robert coming back to ride Finbarr in the Derby itself. He is currently in Monte Carlo which ends tonight. Finnbarr is owned by Many Hall. Can't add anything about Naomi 241 - I know David's been riding her for some weeks.
