Anyone been to Hickstead today or off there tomorrow?

I'm off to watch the derby tomorrow, can't wait as it's the first time I've been.

Any tips to make sure I don't miss anything? Is there food available there or would I be better taking a picnic? What's the shopping like?

I go to both meets most years as I'm local - I was there today, in fact!

There are tons of food places - pasties, burgers etc but as any of these events they can be expensive. I tend to take my own, mainly.

Reserve a seat in the covered grandstand with a cushion, jumper etc early on - it's worth it :-)

I've been today and go every year. There is food there but it's burger van stuff and very expensive, you'll be better off taking a picnic.

Shopping is fab! You could spend all day shopping! Large selection and a mix between real low price every day items, high end stores and some bargins to be had.

I love watching the derby in the main international ring but don't forget to check out the other rings too. They've also built a brand new area in what was ring 5 which is good and is holding some of the bigger classes now it's not so bumpy (was a nightmare before; they used to hold the 1m class in there and it was more of a demolition derby!). The 1.35 class was held in there today and was great to see close up. I also like to have a nose in the warm up, which is often really interesting to watch the big names warm up before their class.

Have a great day!

I really really really hate it when people do this

If you're there, sit down. If you're not, someone else should have the seat. That's the point if having unreserved seating.

I was there yesterday, and someone had left some cushions on seats. I was very tempted to take them off & throw them over the side of the grandstand.

I hate the attitude that people have developed, sorry NPL.

goodness, takes me back to certain Europeans and beach towels on pool loungers :D

Hickstead is fabulous, the thing I miss most about living in England. take a picnic and have fun shopping!

Getting my years mixed up, oops. Parking seems to be an extra money maker everywhere I go at the moment, £5 to park at Thorpe park when entry is £40 odd!

I would think that Hickstead would have to try to recoup some of the money they have spent on making the new all weather arena & funding the Derby as the sponsor pulled out, £10 to park between 4 of you is only £2.50 each!

We were there today, we try to go every year. Shopping was still good but there were definitely less stands than in previous years. We always bring our own picnic and its easy enough to go back to car during the day to get the food. We had a great day despite the weather!

Hey, I went to Ascot for the first time yesterday and paid £20 to park! That was on top of £35 tickets to get into the Silver arena.
