Hidden gems or must haves - gifts

I'm trying to think of what to ask for for my birthday. First world problems, I know! My horse is out of action at the moment and I got the basics for youngsters for Christmas (Bridle, roller, long reins, saddle cloth). I like getting horsey things but I can't think of what to ask for.

I was thinking, what are your must haves, maybe little bits of tech you've discovered that you now swear by, nice bits of kit, fancy lotions and potions etc.

What are your hidden gems?

I’d recommend Oil to horse- makes clipping much easier and you need very little for mane and tail care- plus it lasts for ages.

Brushes - a high quality wooden or leather backed brush. You will have it for a lifetime. Girlfiend (American) and I were pontificating just this morning about who had the oldest and highest quality grooming brushes. As smug as we were we got one upped by an Irish friend who pulled out a photo of her favourite brush that emigrated to Australia with her 30 yrs ago.

I also like a quality hoof pick with a wooden handle and wire bristles. You would think the bristles were made of gold it was so expensive but it’s now 15yrs old.

Or a stock pin, antique only. Can be worn on your favourite jacket/blazer to work when not in horse use.

Really good quality riding gloves.
New boots - for you or your horse.
Holland & Cooper have some really nice quality leather belts.


Trying to think of some lotions/potions I use but don’t think there’s anything special there.

I got an Idolo for tying up and I quite like it.

My sister gave me a wheelbarrow that I use just for hay. So much better than trying to line the mucking out one with old bags to take the hay up to the field.

A really good book on the subject. Either discipline specific, or on breaking young horses, or on management. That sort of thing.
