Daisy seems stuck at the 540 mark on her diet. She is exercised 6 days a week with lots of trot and canter, she is fed soaked hay and Happy Hoof so isn't getting lots of calories but still looks fat. Would Hi Fi Lite have less calories?

What sort of paddock is she out on? How long is she out? Does she need the chaff or if you feed a vit supplement could you just give that on its own? Have you considered muzzling? Do you do plenty of brisk walk?

People do seem to say hifi lite is better than happy hoof.

My farrier said to me, and it's quite true, some horses take a long time to start to lose any and then lose a lot in a short time while others lose a lot straight away and then slow down but still lose gradually. My mare lost a lot straight away, my gelding is losing it very gradually. The weight tape tells me he is 640kg!

wish mine would put it on lol..

Erm happy hoof and hifi light do have diffrent levels in them but to be honest they are both low fat.

Both trot and canter are fine but walking will be more benificial.. hacking more and introducing hill work might also help...

how tall is she?

Good Doer has even less cals than both of them. I used to use happy dieter, but that was withdrawn and after extensive research found that Good Doer has the less cals.

If your horse doesnt have supplements, a basic lo-cal feed balancer will do over the summer, with chaff added over the winter when the grass has gone.

Feed soaked hay too over the winter.

Does your horse have access to lots of grass? Grass is very fattening. Could you strip graze her? A brisk purposefull walk burns the most fat.

Its never easy getting a fatty to loose weight!

LOL My husband says that about me all the time!

Baileys Lo Cal is cheap and seems to be very good, will make sure they have all they need. Suspect the fatty shape may be partly grass/hay belly?

BTW Dengie Healthy Hooves is a lot more appetising stuff than dry n dusty Happy Hoof I reckon

and lo cal and lami safe too. Moist with garlic biotin, chaff and nuts. Lovely stuff.

My vet has always said that they use Hifi Lite extensively for dieting horses & laminitics. He jokes that they use more energy chewing & digesting it that it actually has in it!

I prefer hi fi good doer as it has less calories although slightly more sugar.

I tried Baileys lo-cal and my horse actually put weight on!

My HW cob was 575kg when I got him in October and it took me around 5-6 months to get him down to around 485kg but bearing in mind this was over winter when it was a little easier.

What's the grazing like? How long is she turned out for? Does she really need a hard feed?

I also use hilton herbs metabolyte gold which is a herbal weight lost supplement - it definately seems to have helped my boy lose the excess lbs!

Lots of walking out and hill work, my 14.1hh cob has lost 40 kilos in 5 weeks, from 470 to 430; Fed a large scoop of high fi lite, speedi-beet ( about a handful) handful of high fibre cubes and a mug of Baileys low cal; twice a day!
Very very sparse grazing, no hay, just strip grazed by a foot once a day.

He has been off with suspensory injury for a year and I have been walking him out now for 5 weeks

Its killing me, but he looks fab!!

She's out 24/7 in her own personal fatty paddock, about the size of a tennis court. I could strip graze her if I wanted but the smallest amount of grass seems to make her swell up like a balloon so I'm planning on not moving the fence out again until autumn

she can't be muzzled long term because she has a skin condition but to be honest the grass in her paddock is so short that it wouldn't make any difference

I have been wondering about a weight loss supplement as well, I might try the Hilton Herbs one.

In terms of work, we went out for a four and a half hour hack today, almost all in walk because it was too hot to trot or canter. She can do it fitness wise, its just a shame she's the size of an elephant

I didn't used to give her much hard feed, just a handful to put vits in but the vet said that she needs 1.25kg low calorie chaff each day because there will be less calories in it than grass so it should fill her up but keep her metabolism going with plenty of fibre at the same time.
