Can anybody recommend a high protein feed? My boy is really quite unwell at the minute and his bloody protein levels have come back very low. In a last desperate attempt to get my boy feeling better vet has said try a high protein feed, so some recommendations please?

When I had a horse in that was poorly the highest quality feed I found was a yearling feed which helped get the levels up. Micronised linseed is very high protein and you can feed small amounts which should still make a difference.

Horses protein needs are not that well researched (as opposed to cattle and other farm animals), but they don't need that much protein and for adult horses 14% apears to be plenty/max (the average adult horse does well on 10% or less; broodmares and younstock 12%). Some racehorse and yearling feeds can go as high as 26% - this is excessive and can lead to OCD and epyphisys (sp).

I have been advised by my vet to feed a high protein feed for a short period due to blood results, protein feeds my not be that we'll research but my boys blood results show he needs my protein.

Something like Saracen Stamm 30 which is very high protein at 30% - but low calorie and fed in very small amounts (like a cup). I fed this in the past to very good doers supplemented only by forage and to a horse that came into me looking quite poor and in two weeks he had a good shine and was starting to look well in himself.
