Our local weather guru, who's pretty accurate at reading the charts, is forecasting 100mph+ gusts of wind overnight tomorrow night. The field shelter, which will shut to become a stable if required, is side on to the expected direction, so should stay put, and is down the hill which should help a bit. Everyone in the village is good about strapping down anything moveable but with winds that high there's always the risk that something will go flying (possibly even the field shelter!), particularly since there's a semi-derelict house next door where the byre roof (corrugated iron) slipped in the last winds.

Sooooo - let him take himself in if he wants, like normal, or shut him in overnight?

If theres a risk of stuff flying about id rather my guys are in, but my stables are stone and stood for years through gales and storms.
I think in your case leave it open then if they want to go in they can, but if its not secure and starts to move, they can get out.
