Has she been out to see anyone here? I feel I need to experiment with some different bits to try and get my boy to relax through his jaw (dentist been out yesterday and says he has a perfect mouth at the mo)
I was looking for some individual attention so emailed Hilary Vernon. No reply. I have also left a message on her mobile. No reply for over a week.
I have heard that she is very expensive and used to promote Myler bits but now has her own range (again very expensive) and to be honest, if she cant be bothered to return a call, should I spend my hard earned money with her??
Just wondered if anyone has used her and what they thought?
Or any other recommendations for someone to come out and try different bits? We are near Derby but could travel.
Thanks in advance x

Also called and never recieved a reply. Called up Neue Schile on instructors recommendation. Blown away by how extremely helpful they were explaining why they would suggest different bits and really finding alot out about my mare. Zero 'salesy-ness' too. Big thumbs up from me! (and mare is very happy in her bit that they suggested!).

I've dealt with Myler before and found them very helpful as well.

Another option is to ring a pro who specialises in your discipline, explain the situation, and see if you can buy an hour of their time to try whatever they have in the bit box.

There is a really good bit hire shop in Grimston near Melton Mowbray. They give advice over then phone, and then you can buy/hire from their website. I have used them before for advice. I didn't happen to buy a bit from them, as I aready had it in my collection, but it turned out to be the right one!

Another one that phoned several times and sent several emails with no response.

I've heard that she's good but that it was not uncommon to not hear anything from her

tbh i don't think there is any substitute for patient trial and error at home, with an array of borrowed bits and nosebands. i'd start with a mullen, plus something with a small lozenge (i love the KK bits), a symmetrical single-jointed bit, and a cavesson and drop noseband, and have a play. basics - if horse carries head too low, have it up a hole on one or both sides, if horse carries head too high, down a hole on one or both sides, just for starters.
i'd get his back and neck checked too, i've known lots of horses who, when they were sore, 'out' or whatever you want to call it, physically could not or just would not give at the jaw and/or poll. gentle flexions when you are standing beside him should give him the idea, and show you whether he has a physical problem with it.

Hilary Vernon fitted bits for 2 of my mares. In both cases the new bits were quite different to what we were previously using. She explained why she recommended what she did, based on mouth confirmation / way of going / whether we needed something dressage legal etc and the bits she provided seem to be comfortable. She is very hard to get hold of though.

I have used Hilary for my saddler (she also works for Barnsby) and she is very knowledgeable and when she is actually with you takes her time and will spend as much time as need be. But, yes, she is really really bad at returning calls & texts etc

Thanks for all your replies. I think I might speak to myler or another company and see what they suggest. It is just so overwhelming when there is so much to choose from I dont know where to start and not being very experienced (mine have always gone well in loose ring jointed snaffles). Thanks again x
