Hi, am in the process of putting my horse gradually back into work following a tendon injuryon his near hind. Fingers crossed we get to the faster work stage, what boots can I use on the hind legs that would offer extra support and protection for the tendons, suspensories etc? Thought SMBs might be good but think I am correct in thinking that they are only for the front legs (or maybe that's only where I've seen them worn)? Thanks in advance.

The bog-standard SMBs are for front or hind, and the SMB Elite version comes in differently shaped ones for front or hind. BUT there is debate whether SMBs are any good for tendon injuries, as they heat the tendon up supposedly making it more likely to become injured (which you really don't need after an existing injury, seeing as this also makes it more likely to become injured again as well - you need as little risk as possible). IMO the best wrap type support boots are Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Training Wraps, they are basically a breathable version of SMBs. That way you get the support without heating the leg so much. I love mine, my mare (also tendon injury but on front leg) will be wearing them when she comes back into work next year. I wouldn't use them for XC but for flatwork and hacking, and maybe SJ, they'd be fine. Plus, they're £50 ish (SMB Elites are about £70)!

I'd recommend the Dalmar aircooled boots. They are very light but re-enforced for extra protection. The air flow keeps the tendons cool. Research has shown that if tendons get overheated they are more susceptable to damage.

Another supported of the equilibrium S&F boots but not for faster work. For fast work and XC i use the premier equine air cooled competition boots which have some fab support and are air cooled so the tendons dont heat up.

I agree to! S&F boots are fantastic for flat as they are so breathable and fit well! but not for fast work, i would say for fast work try either: Premier equine air cooled boots, New Equine Wear - airflow sport boot or Dalmar aircooled boots! these types of boots allow lots of airflow which will be good to stop boots and legs heating up and they have good protection for vital parts!!
