hind bumper?

on a john whitaker or pessoa..what does the bumper bit around the back legs do?

Encourages the horse to move forwards and step under. Its just sheepskin covered rope, nohing fancy.

I used to lunge the horses at Geoff's yard in a home made contraption made of some rope, old hosepipe and small clips. A home made one can be done you just need to get it just right
