I will be getting it checked but in the meantime, just wondered if anyone has any ideas? (Posted in vets too)
Noticed my horse felt weird in trot but only the first trot and a few strides. After that fine for the rest of the ride. Fine in canter and walk. Did it again the next time I rode, so I lead her off my other horse to watch her trot and see what happens and looks like she is dropping her hip on one side. But again after the first few strides she stops doing it, then starts snd stops trotting no problem. She doesn't seem bothered at all but I am! ?

Bone spavin.
Agree. Arthritis.

Whenever the vet came to trot up Bailey and she'd been in the stable for any length of time we would always trot her two or three times the length of the barn and back again as the difference between the first trot and trot three was markedly different.

Same as I'm crippled when I first get out of my car after driving but having gone a few steps to the front door can walk near enough normal again. If I pop to the shops on the way home, I'm not nearly as bad as I've broken up the journey time by walking.

Thanks for the replies. Vet suspects it may well be bone spavin, but says too early to say if it needs more treatment/investigation, will do a weeks rest with bute first to see if it helps. Im gutted shes only 12 ?

Why not just x-ray the hocks ?
Mine is 8 with one hock almost fused. Especially hock arthritis isn't a young horse's disease any more - lots of 5 and 6 year olds are being injected.

I think xray/nerve blocks will be the next thing if this doesnt work. I will probably do another thread about peoples experiences with it. I dont know what to expect tbh if its a career ending thing or not ?

I suggested bone spavin on the other thread.

It may mean a lower level career, but once they have fused horses can be comfortable and in a reasonable level of work.

Personally, I would X ray now though so you really know what you are dealing with. A week on bute won't make any difference in a long term prognosis.

I had one as a 15 year old. He had treatment that isn't done now, but I think it was the year off and return to work slowly that did it. He returned to jumping etc. Once fused, it is fused.

I have worked with some who were injected, they had some time off then a year straight lines only, and also came sound.
