Does anyone have any suggestions..

Pony has been mildly lame on his left hind for 2 months. Came sound on 2 bute then lame again once we stopped. Had damage to his tissue in his SI so had him steriod injected 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately he is now hopping lame in trot but completely sound in walk on any surface! He also turns his left hoof outwards when standing in the stable.
Looking for suggestions as our vets said possibly look at his stifle next?

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry you've got a problem.

Can I ask why you aren't just going with what the vet says? It sounds as if stifle is the right place to look, but you need some nerve blocks to isolate exactly where the problem is, it could be lower.

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to say he was nerve blocked up to his stifle last year but came sound after 2 weeks. Unfortunately my vet isn't sure where to look as he has been nerve blocked (last year) and there are no signs of anything. They said maybe look at his stifle again so was wondering if anyone had any advice of have seen anything like this before 😊 We were also running out of insurance money

Last year is 5 or 6 months back now? Those blocks mean nothing now I'm afraid.

You'd be best off getting him to a hospital for a proper work up. If you try and pick it apart bit by bit it will likely end up costing more.

I'm afraid horses were carefully designed to bankrupt their owners!

And in answer to your other question, yes the forum is littered with horses who had their sacroiliac or back medicated only to find out that the SI or back was sore because the hocks or stifles or both were sore.

Thank you for your help 😊

Where are you based Charlie? Can you get to Halifax? My mare has been lame and out of work for 6 months with my vets and their referral horsepital not really coming up with answers or a fix and used all my insurance money. Last week I went to a recommended vet 2 hours away from me and mare was diagnosed and started treatment on the same day and I’ve been instructed to ride in walk to rebuild muscles so the first time in months I feel hopeful.

Sorry to hear about your mare! What did your vet diagnose? I have been hand walking and just introduced poles as he is sound in walk to strengthen muscles

Acute medial collateral ligament injury with sub luxating patella…she s having Sungate injections… 1 a month for 3 months and I’ve been told to get back on board and walk 20 minutes a day for the first month then we go back for another assessment and injection. I was a lot more pleased bringing her saddle out than she was to see it yesterday but we rode through flat open fields relaxed and happy and long may it continue. We have quite a steep hill to and from the arena so we do that in hand as she’s slipping quite a lot.

Really good news you have a diagnosis. Good luck let us know how you get on! We are booked back in for nerve blocks
