Who's horses has had the diagnosis of hind suspensory damage and recommended treatment is de nevring. Was wondering if you had your horse treated medically or if not what did you do to help him. My horse has just been diagonsed with hind supensory problems and i have just had cortisone injected but nothing else. He's only 11 and not insured. He hunts, TC and events and would love for him to return to some sort of work but the vets only say 45% chance of this happening. Any thoughts?

My horse has been diagnosed with both hind suspensory damage and the vet recommended shock wave treatment but he is insured thank goodness. He has had 3 lots of shock wave and 4 months rest and I am now hacking him 3 or 4 times a week and he is sound. He is on 1 Danilon a day but it is worth it to keep him happy. I don't know how long he will stay sound but we do not do any schooling or jumping, just hacking and as long as he is sound he is happy. I know each horse is very different and it does depend how bad the damage is but a lot of horses return to full work after a 6 month rest etc. Good luck.

Mine did both hind suspensories in July 2007, but only very minor, and had 3 lots of shockwave treatment on each. She was kept on box rest for nearly 9months but after 4 she had a very small fenced area for turnout just to keep her sane. After the final treatment I had to start walking her building up from 5 mins to about an hour over 2 months(ish!).

By June 2008 I started eventing her at Intro as had only previously show jumped but my trainer thought she was in the wrong sphere. By the end of August, in 4 events she was at Novice!! This did seem very soon at the time but the vet had been very careful to build her work up slowly so that when we could compete again it would be as normal.

In 2009 she did a season of novice without any problems at all!! This year I plan to go Intermediate with her.

Thought you might like to hear a success story!! I am very careful with her legs though, and won't run her on deep ground as that is what the vet thinks caused it-a grass bsja show where they thought they would be clever and put a load of sand on top to stop it getting hard, it was like a dry beach!!

Good luck though, and don't rush the recovery, it will all pay off in the end!

my mare had both suspensories denerved at rossdales with sucess.also had shockwave x 3 .luckily she was insured as treatment was £5000.she was very good on box rest and i have been very careful with her.she doesnt jump and dont take her out if deep going

My horse has had shockwave therapy andadequan injections for hind suspensories this summer. 13 weeks box rest but in hand walking right from the start - about 10 mins a day for first 5 weeks, then following rescan build up walking to about 50 minutes at which point I got back on board, I couldn't face walking any more

! Vet said he was impressed I held out that long! We're now pretty much back to normal (haven't jumped yet!) just working on building up back muscles again.

Another horse on yard had the op and was off work a lot longer, but now pretty much back into full work too. Both horses were diagnosed within a few weeks of each other, but can only think Horse 2 had more damage or had been damaged for longer

that required the Op.

Thanks for the success story tinkerbell. I think it might be worth speaking to the vets about shock wave therapy now. It has been a couple of months since he was diagnosed and i think any inflammation should should have decreased. Although I could never see it externally the scan showed the damage in black and white. I would love for him to return to eventing. You deid brill for yours to go novice so fast!!

Hope J does well if he returns.
