My mare is lame on her near hind only when ridden, this is the second time that this has happened this year and was initially diagnosed by my vet as a urinary infection. After a course of antibiotics she eventually came sound and has been sucessfully competed all summer and autumn. It has now come back and I would really like to hear from anyone else who has experienced anything similar. My mare is in fantastic condition she is very well, eating fine and is happy there is nothing in her leg at all and she trots up sound and has passed flexion tests. Her back seems sore just on that side and she will pull faces when her girth is tightened. I am awaiting the results of blood and urine tests. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

get a physio out and then check that her saddle actually fits

If it's only when ridden it's either the saddle or your riding! Is she lame when lunged without tack? Is she lame if you ride bareback? Is she lame if a different rider rides her in her saddle?

Hmm has she been scoped for ulcers? Not the classic symptoms but sometimes avoiding gait changes and directional changes can be a symptom?

Is she mareish? Grumpy when hormonal? That can cause back pain.

Im also wondering whether it could be hind gut pain, id have to check which side the cecums on cos i cant remeber off the top of my head but if she is having trouble there it would explain why only lame when ridden. What are her poos like? Whats she fed?
