My 23 year old gelding came in not quite right on his right hind yesterday. At rest when he goes to put weight on the leg he hesitates before fully engaging though the fetlock and straightening the leg. He does put weight on the leg and is not noticeably lame when in walk apart from his usual stiffness. He had a tear to his suspensory ligament last year and although ultrasound revealed this had fully healed he has always seemed slightly stiff like this since. This was worse yesterday and this morning he has some heat around and just above the fetlock. He also has arthritis in the hock of his left leg. Has anyone seen similar symptoms or have any advice?

He is a grand age and would be expected to have aches and pains. Your vet is the best person to approach first. My old boy is much the same, he is managed with maximum freedom of movement and pain relief as required.

Thanks AdorableAlice, I have rung the vet who treated the ligament injury last year and waiting to hear back. My main problem is that the fields are deep mud and I'm worried that turning him out in this is not going to do him any good if its a re-injury of the ligament. I'm moving him in a couple of months to a much better place so just trying to cope until then!
