Hip arthroscopy, any experiences?

I am having surgery in a few weeks to repair a torn labrum and resurface the femoral head in my hip (caused by a riding fall what a surprise!). Hospital have just said at the moment to expect to be on crutches for 2 weeks, and return to normal exercise within 3-4 months (eek!), but not much about the in between bit.

Has anyone had this type of surgery and give an indication of how long I might be out of the saddle for? Would I be able to manage hacking and some gentle school work after a few weeks? Horse is fairly quiet and doesn't throw too many interesting shapes...

Any experiences would be helpful :)

My OH has had both of his done. He doesn’t ride now, but is a farrier. He was back to work and doing most normal stuff after 2 weeks. He wasn’t on crutches at all, either time. ? He did have the op privately, so if you are NhS, maybe there is a difference how they do it? He also had stem cells put into the hip which should stop arthritis developing for about 20 years, too.

that's good to hear your OH was back to normal in 2 weeks! It will be NHS for me and the paperwork explaining the procedure definitely says I'm to be non-weight bearing/on crutches for 2 weeks but I'm hoping I can be back to normal fairly quickly.

Also not having stem cells as far as I know but I'm in my mid-20s so not sure they'd bother with that.

I broken my hip 3 years ago in a fall from a young horse, I was 63 at the time. Was only in hospital for 5 days, they put a dynamic hip screw in and I was up on crutches for about 3 weeks then at my check up they said I could gradually start weight bearing. I was back on my horse in 4 months. Rather stiff and took it steady but I got there and am still riding at 66. Good luck Im sure you will cope very well.

As you are younger than my OH was, hopefully you will heal even faster! The surgeon who did my husbands op, was the surgeon who actually pioneered hip arthroscopy. The only reason we went private was because the op wasn’t available at that time, on the NHS, but about a year after we paid, it was rolled out.
Good luck.
