Because we're all borderline alcoholics? Or maybe because sometimes a quick tip of port warms your bones on a cold day. Or because some of us need some dutch courage to get our butts into gear over some fences.

I'll have homemade blackberry vodka in mine this year. Last year i took ribena and ended up drinking a friends, so i have to re-pay the favour this year :O)

There is a theory that it stops you breaking bones in a fall as you are relaxed on impact, my argument was that members of the Fitz stood less chance of falling off if they tried hunting without alcohol...

Most often I have a bottle of water in my backpack, I tried one of those Platypus thinggys with the tube, but found I was drinking too much and needing a pee every 20 seconds!!

Port at the moment will be cherry brandy when I can find somewhere that sells it.
By the time it has been passed round (and my boss has drank half of it) you only get a mouthful yourself.

The reason why, because it is traditional and it is a polite why of introducing yourself to people.
It would be the same as asking why is port and sausage rolls handed out at the meet...

we have one of the following...
port
chocolate ruby port (yes port and chocolate in one drink!)
well matured sloe gin
Chestnut liquer - smells like whisky, but tastes like port with nuts in
glayva - a whiskey and honey and herby thing similar to drambuie

or more often than not - nothing cos i forget to take it!

as to why - because it's a polite way to introduce yourself, it's traditional and its all about being sociable. Where we hunt there isn't much jumping or many roads, you're more likely to come off in a bog than over a hedge!

I don't mind how much people drink out hunting, just so long as they then don't attempt to drive home and this is a stance that I take on any social event or activity. A close friend was nearly killed by a drink driver when he was 14, his leg is now held together with pieces of metal and hurts a good deal of the time.

Oh come on a flask only holds about 6oz if liquid, if you pass it round and everyone has a sip we are hardly likely to end up paralytic! As said on here is is tradition and social, if you turn it down you look grumpy and unsociable. Out yesterday most people emptied there flasks and i did not see a single person who was anywhere remotely near drunk!!!!!!!!!

but people dont know when enough is enough one drink is sometimes too much

I do agree in a way with you here. I might take a hip flask and maybe one or two of my friends do but to be honest i rarely drink that much of it. I have the odd sip here and there and pass it around. I would never drink and drive and i would never spoil my day or anyone elses by being drunk and hunting. I think there is a fine line when doing this. But to be honest i have only ever seen one person drunk when hunting and she got a large lecture at the end by the hunt staff about bad conduct.
I think what you need to think about is that just because people do take a hipflask it doesn't mean they want to get rip rolling drunk. Some people take it because that's what they've done for 20 odd years, some people take it because they want the odd tot now and again. I think as long as people are sensible then there's no problem. Just because you enjoy a sip or two it does not make you dependant on alcohol.

Because I like the taste!

To the OP, I have Mead, Plum Brandy or Sloe Liquer in mine, usually I drink it in the box on the way home (not driving I hasten to add!) because I'm too scared everyone will shoot off if I get it out when we pause!

Chocolate Ruby Port - OMG that sounds so good! Gonna have to get hold of some of that! :p

I love how a thread can go from asking a fun loving question like "what do you put in your hip flask?" to all out war about people drinking and driving. Whilst I am all against people drink driving, I can't see how a sip from a hip flask can be seen as potential to get absolutely wasted! I agree that drinking is a good way to socialise with people and has been going on for years in hunting circles - why break a tradition?!

But do be careful now peeps - you can be done for drunk in charge of a dangerous animal!!! ;)
