Posting for a Friend of a Friend.
S has recently had a hip replacement and is finding it difficult to get her position right. She uses a poorly made treeless saddle (this is heresay havent seen myself) she sat on D's horse to try a Dressage Saddle and cannot get her leg on the saddle it is angled foreward of the flap.

Anyone here with experience of smae who can make suggestions to help S.

How long ago was it?

Not trying to be unhelpful but surely this lady has a physio and a team of surgeons who ought to be telling her when she can ride or not...

It may depend on the type of hip replacement your friend had. There are two types one is more robust but less mobile then the other. My mother in law had the more mobile version and is back riding in under 6 months from the replacement with no mobility issues. She is an occasional happy hacker.

Thanks Guys I think she had her op before Christmas unfortunately my friend D has a habit of not getting all the info and I have asked the same questions. I dont know which op she had I will try and find out.

If it were me I would have given the surgeon a photo of how I wanted to sit on my horse.:-)

In actual fact there are more than two. There are at least 10 companies in the UK alone that produce many different types made of different materials. I think you mean your MIL's surgeon only uses two types. One cheaper than the other.

It also depends on a surgeons ability to perform arthroplasty and the patients ability to follow rehabilitation exercises.

I'm just pointing out that not every hip surgery has the same outcome and if I were the patient i would have mentioned I do a bit of riding therefore the surgeon would have been able to tailor my rehab accordingly and hopefully help me get back in the saddle. They're not all idiots.

You could suggest that she asks her local RDA for some advice? She might also find sidesaddle easier but I would DEFINITELY consult her doctor before she tries that out.

Please try and persuade her to be careful, especially if the operation was quite recent, when my gramps had his done there were some horrific tales of when the scars fail and the new joint dislocates, from his surgeon and also from my mum (a nurse)
