hip replacement

A member of our RC had a double hip replacement op in her late 50s. She was advised not to ride again but has ignored that advice. She takes part in all RC activities except very long hacks. The only real problem she has is in getting back onto the horse if she has to get off - she needs a fairly high mounting block. I can't remember exactly how long she was off riding but it was a few months.

Hi,

My friend had a hip replacement (early 40's) and was riding again after about 6 months. Her doctor was more concerned about the possibility of a fall than the actual riding I think. She cannot get on from the floor now, and finds longer rides a bit uncomfortable but otherwise is back to normal riding.

My pal at old stables had 2 replacement hips and did the longest hacks of anyone, and was riding every single day rain or shine, I used to borrow her cob for sponsored rides cos she was so fit!

She would mount from a high mounting block and had long stirrups and a seat saver. She kept herself very fit outside horse riding too, swimming and stuff, she was the most glam and perfectly presented person in the yard!

My dear old mum still rides with her hip replaced and is waiting for the other one to be done. She only ever rode every now and then (2-3 times a month) before the op, didnt ride for a bit after but has decided that she now wants to ride more so has brought her old boy out of retirement and rides daily now!!! She says she is more flexible as a result of riding. She cant get on from the floor and it took a while for her to be able to get of 'properly' (she used to do a leg over the neck job!) but she can do now. She has even decided that she wants to learn to jump(her horse jumps but only ever - untill now!!! - with me!) so now she is jumping! She has also started hacking out my baby (4yrs old goging on 14!) and my 17hh eventer! Both a very safe hacks (as much as you can trust a 4 yr old) but her confidence has really grown.

That said, she is very nervous of falling. She thinks that if she did it would be very bad news so her competitive life may be limited to the 18inches, aged over 35 classes our local RC run!!

Isn't there a woman in her 60's with 2 hip replacements who has just joined BE for the first time? I';m sure I read that somewhere!!

If you have any specific questions you would like me to ask her, feel free to PM me!
