Hi is there anyone out there who has had a "Birmingham hip" which is a resurfacing of the hip instead of a hip replacement.
The orthopedic surgeon is not keen on horse riding so I get a non committal reply to the question, so if you can help please reply.
I have a fabulous Swedish warm blood but he can play up a bit and I need to make a decision on selling or loaning,(loaning for six months till I'm back).

Hey, my mum has has a birmingham and is on the waiting list for the other hip to be done. She still rides out a few times a week and actually thinks that it is helping her to keep supple. She disnt ride for quite a while after the op but has recently begun to ride again and says that it does hurt a little to beging with ( bit I think that both the non-replaced hip hurts more) but is getting better on both sides... She is however petrified of falling and so will only ride her old boy who wouldnt shy if a nuclear missile went of next to him! In regards to your horse... I guess it is a personal preference. My mother never asked her surgeon so from a medical perspective I cant comment, but I would say that it really is up to you - I worked in opthopaedics and each patient will react and recover differently to surgery so I definatley dont think that is a 'one size fits all' kind of thing.

Sorry if this isnt too helpful.

If you have any specific questions you would like me to ask her, feel free to PM me.

Hi I havn't had a "Birmingham hip" or a hip replacement. But i nearly had to have a hip replacement when i broke my hip nearly 2 years ago. Luckly i just had my hip pinned and plated back together and it healed. But my orthopedic surgeon told me i should never ride again. I was riding 4 months to the day of my axcident :p. They tell you not to ride to cover there backs if something happened to you. He said if i fell off and did my hip again the bone won't break next time it will shatter!! But i have carried on riding and even hunting.
I know afew people who have had hip and knee replacements that carried on riding. But have no expereance of a "Birmingham hip" but i bet your surgon is just being careful. As long as you take it slowly and don't do more than you feel comfortable doing you'll probably be ok to ride :)

:D:Dhi, i have had both hips done (birmingham hip op) its fab!!!!!!!! i could hardly ride at all before as it was so painful and i felt very insecure in the saddle and lost my nerve as i came off a couple of times because i was so stiff and seemed to be riding 'on top' of the saddle and felt very unbalanced. i now feel great and am riding 'in' the saddle and my confidence (and stickability)has gone back to how i was before the hip problems. my surgeon said riding was ok as it was a normal activity for me but would not recommend anyone starting riding for the first time after hip surgery. before the hip ops i used to lunge my horse for 20 mins, then ride for 10 mins and that was about as much as i could manage. i now ride for as long as i want to, the only slight problem is i dont have as much flexibility in my lower leg as i used to, but that could be age related and nothing to do with the hips. i did take 6 months off from riding my horse as she is very spooky and i went to a local riding school a few times so i could get on a quiet horse first, so loaning yours for 6 mths might be a good idea....good luck........:D:D

My friend had both her hips replaced before she was 50. She is a new woman since then and rides and competes regularly. She was in so much pain before whether she was riding or walking.

I can't believe the difference in her.

A member of our riding club who is over 60 had 2 hip replacements about 3 yrs ago. Today, she entered our Senior Gymkhana on a 17.1hh Irish Draft. She came 2nd in many events. She has also entered SJ, Dressage and xc comps recently. The only difficulty she has is with getting on and off.
The 6 months loan sounds like your best option to me.
