hip scores??

Basically both dogs will have been x-rayed under a general anaesthetic and then the plates sent to the BVA/KC panel for assessment. They look at various angles and measurements and give each hip a score. The LOWER the score the better. The sire of your pup would appear to have one hip significantly better than the other.
All the scores for the breed are collated to produce the Breed mean score - to breed from the dog you would expect a score equal to or ideally better than the average for the breed.
In order to know if your pups parents scores are good I would need to know the breed, but 4 is pretty good for any breed.

Hi thanks for clearing that up for me, he is a Black Russian Terrier.
I didn't know it went off breed, the breeder said that if i wanted to breed from him (which i don't) i would have to have him hip scored.
Is it worth having done anyway?
Jo

The breed mean score for the russian terrier is 48 so both your pups parents hips are well under. Mind only 14 had been scored when this chart was compiled! Not the commonest breed as you know! I have a client who has one and he is lovely and really nice temperament. Would love to see some pics of yours.
TBH unless you are going to breed from your dog there isn't any need to score his hips. If he was having any lameness issues then your vet might chose to x-ray him for diagnosis but wouldn't need to get the plates scored. Hopefully he's not going to have any problems like this anyway.

Thanks for that!!
i'm probably being a little over protective, i lost one of my dogs to Renal Failure just after new year and am a little "edgey" with Kodi's health.
i know i will relax a bit more as time goes by, and need to stop over analysing everything.
You have certainly put my mind at rest.
Jo

We had our dog hip scored because their are problems with the hips in the breed and it is important to get an overall picture. Plus we wanted to do lots of activities with him which meant he had to have strong hips. So it not only depends on whether you are going to breed from your dog but also what lifestyle they are going to live.

He is going to be the farm guard dog,

so will be doing lots of mooching, all off the lead so his joints won't be put under any major pressure

if your not going to breed then there is no point getting hips scored as its a lot of money... dogs are usually sedated at proper hip scoring centers instead of being under a general at the vets...

the lower the score the better, generally in my breed if the score adds to more than 14 then they wouldnt breed... there are lots of 0/0's in our breed though but it vairies in breeds
