hip scoring border collies

Dog has to be at least 12months & undergoes a full general so that they can put the hips into the persitions that they require. Then the xrays are sent off to be evaluated & you get a score depening on them. 0/0 being the best & obviously rising as they appear worse. Hope this help
Hopefully Star will be able to give you more exact info.

Forgot to say my vets have quoted me £130 to have it done. Though if you have a vet school near you could poss get done cheaper???

If you are going to get it done - best to go to a vet who is experienced in it as poor xrays/positioning can mean a poor score.
They are sent to the BVA to a panel of vets - the panel meets every 3 weeks so could take 6 weeks to get the results if you are unlucky with timing.

As well as the vets fees for taking the xrays there is a fee to BVA for assessing them. I recently had my GSD scored for both hips & elbows whcih was £58.80. I think just hips was around £38.

They can only be scored once (although you can appeal the decision) & the result is recorded by the Kennel Club on the dogs record. A score is given for the right then left hip joint but is frequently combined eg 3/3 or 6. the Breed Mean Score (BMS) for border collies is 13 which is middling (median score is 11)

Actually if the panel are unhappy with the vets X-rays they will send them back and ask you to resubmit them. The secret is getting them totally straight which can be difficult with deeper chest breeds as they tend to flop about! Most vets and veterinary nurses do hundreds of hip x-rays for diagnosis of problems or for the scheme and are pretty experienced at getting the dog completely straight.
Like I said the BVA will send them straight back if they aren't up to scratch so you won't get a poor score due to poor positioning. It does mean if a substandard X-ray were submitted however that the dog would have to come back in for another GA to reX-ray the hips - This means most vets are ultracareful to get a decent pic first time round.

We have just had Brego done twice! The vets didn't get it right the first time and it was sent back. Soem vets do it under sedation if you are worried under your dog going under GA
